is there a way to let things go? I mean, if you say or do something stupid (not wrong....just stupid) is there any way to make yourself forget it? I've tried saying to myself 'it's ok, you did your best' and things like that but it doesn't help any and I'll spend all night laying in bed just thinking about. My mind won't let me forget it. Is there any other way besides just telling yourself it's ok??

it's always in the back of my mind even when i'm doing something i really enjoy. it's not a big deal and i'll probably (or i should say hopefully) forget it in about 2 weeks but i want to forget it sooner. like now.

This visualization really works:
If you're worrying about something that you can do nothing about, then do the following:
Visualize the problem situation & place it, in your imagination, on the windshield of a car. Then visualize the wipers wiping the situation away - off into nothingness.
If the thought returns, "wipe" it again. This is very very effective.
Good luck

paradoxically, by trying to make yourself forget "it," you are necessarily forcing yourself to think about it. Live with the fact that you can't will yourself to forget about something. Also know that once an unwanted thought enters your mind, you have control over how long you entertain it.
For example, if an unwanted thought enters your mind and you immediately read a book, go exercise, go play, hug a family memeber, etc, you will find that you are now focused on something else and you will have spent less time thiking about what you want to avoid.

Try to focus on all the good things that you usually do and forget the bad. It is a curse to be one of the type of people who just cannot let go of things. I also happen to be one of them. When you start to think about the issue that is bothering you, do anything you can to think of something else. Maybe just start counting sheep if it will help. Or try to think about something stupid someone else did. Whatever it was just put it down to experience and decide not to do that again.

I have to think of something completely different and even then sometimes it takes me a while. I just force my thoughts elsewhere. I just had a similar issue this week. Other than that, I step back, think about how little it will affect my life in the end, and keep going. Or think about how I could be starving to death. Usually, reading a book or thinking about something else will work for me.

We don't need to be perfect and we all make mistakes every day. This is part of the human condition. Wouldn't it be boring if we were all perfect? Try to find something humorous about your behavior. Some of the stupid things I have inadvertently said that make me cringe with embarrassment eventually have a funny side that takes away the sting. Ask yourself why you think you must be the one person who makes mistakes?

I used to think that way,
I know this sounds really weird, the best way to get out of that is actually run thru the event in your mind and then pretend as if it is happening again and change what you think you should have done. That way your mind has something new to think about and next time you are in that situation, you will know what to do

Consider this: we ALL draw experiences from which to learn with, good, bad or indifferent. That which is bothering you has brought you a gift in the form of a lesson. Accept it. Use it. Learn from it. Unless you can draw a lesson from it, it will haunt you and bother you. We all have one or several of those experiences... some of us have an over-abundance of those... and we're called very wise and experienced! In time, you will find it humorous, and even moreso when you see someone else do the same thing, believe me.

Perhaps you have an anxiety disorder and need to take a mild sedative when you feel that way.
