Eat right and exercise. Cut out fats and junk foods. Eat more fresh vegetables, especially leafy green ones. And move more. The idea is to burn more calories than you consume.
Other than those tips, consult your doctor or join the local gym. They usually have a nutritionist on staff to help you get your diet in line with your new exercise plan. You might try taking a class at the local community college. Ours comes with a free gym membership (for students) as well as helpful instructors who actually listen to the needs and abilities of their students.
Whatever you do...start moving. I actually get myself motivated by raising money and walking for March of Dimes each year. When I don't feel like walking or eating right, I remind myself that I'm doing this to feel better and to be fit enough to walk the 7 miles.

Rule # 1 - there is NO secret. You must burn more calories than you digest. Simple, but many people thing there is a magic bullet.
Rule # 2 - find a diet & a form of exercise that you enjoy - that'll help. Don't just think you have to go to the gym, just becuase other people do.
Personally, I do a specialized 30 minute program on the treadmill at home 6 days a week, watching something vigorous like the Tour De France or the NBC show Biggest Loser - anything where other people are suffering more than me :-)
There are tricks, like exercise before meals or first thing in the morning - but if they don't work for you, don't try to force it & make yourself miserable enough to quit - doing something fun makes it easier to apply RULE # 1.

With a nick like Bernie I am thinking you are a man. Weight loss for men is a funny thing.....you can cut out a food group and lose weight. I will give a few examples of foods that men like....figure which one is your downfall and cut it from your diet....I bet you lose weight.
Bread: Love bread???? Eat more than 2 slices for a meal???? Switch to tortillas!
Pasta: If you can eat more than 2 cups of pasta at a setting then consider replacing it with......lettuce or spaghetti squash!
Butter???? Switch to Butter Buds(non-fat liquid) or low-fat sour cream.
Potatoes: This is a huge prob for many men. Huge portions of mashed potatoes with lots of toppings....switch to baked potatoes(1) with low fat sour cream or fat-less gravy.
Meat: If meat is really your thing then switch to ONLY meat....try a low carb diet. It works for many men and if you are a meat eater then you will do well!
Unless you cook all of your own meals then you need to talk to the cook about your diet. Many women, including Mothers and Wives, will sub-consciously over feed their men to keep them at home.
PS, If eating out is your thing then you have it easy.....start cooking only for yourself and you will be thin in no time....restaurant chefs are the Moms from hell! They will dump 4 ounces of butter over a dish and think nothing of it!
Very very good luck....and remember for every 20 pounds you lose you gain 1 inch of penis length....that may help....GL!
