The exorcist should be a born again Holy Spirit filled believer. He should never attempt to do this alone. A team works much better. It can take a long time depending on the severity of the sitiuation. The room used should be free of excess furniture as the person who is the victim can become violent and may be very strong because of the possession. Children should not be present. Unbelievers should not be present. I have dealt with this several times in my life... some with success, and others with limited success. Sometimes it takes multiple sessions. Sometimes the exorcist need to teach the possessed when they are in their lucid state, how to fight the demons from within themselves. They have to want to be free.

Well from what i have seen a possessed person can take on a level of strength and fortidude unlike what would be normaly humanly possable....
I'ved seen a possed 13 year old girl beat the crud out of 10 grown men....
it took some very very large men to hold her down....
other factor i could say would probly be what ever it is possessing ... just possessin something else once it's kicked out.

Someone in NY city performed a Santeria exorcism on a middle aged woman. The priestess poured 'Florida water' on the woman. (Florida water has alcohol in it.) There were candles present & somehow the candle flame & the alcohol came in contact & burned the woman's skin real badly. She died of the burns a while after that & the priestess got a jail sentence.

16 And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
17 And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks also dwelling at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18 And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.
I guess that they found out that they cannot do well if not covered!

Personally I believe there is no such thing as possession, so there is no danger of your being hurt.
Whoever you're planning on "exorcising", take them to a psychiatric hospital. That's what we do in the 21st century.
And reading the posts above, I can't believe there are people in this day and age who actually believe in this stuff.

Well, it could choose to "shed" the body of whoever was taken, possibly leaving damage. You could be attacked or possessed aswell. And then theres the other's body being used against you. It could alter your perceptions, making you vulernable or dangerous....there are just hosts and hosts of dangers.

I have been to deliverance's ..what you call exorcisms....you must be right with God...there can be no open door for the enemy to enter in your life.....I fast and pray before and ask God to reveal to me any area I need to make right with him...in case there is something I may have not repented of...
In Deliverance.....you must always do this in a group.and allow the Holy Spirit to lead you through each moment....there are intercessors we bring who it is their job thorough all this is to lift us up in prayer for understanding , discernment and protection....there is much to know and learn......there should be no fear on your part for you are a child of God and the enemy must bow down to the name of Jesus....but if you do not have a relationship with God then it will show and the enemy will have a hay day with you.....do not argue with the enemy speak to it what it is to do and that is that......too many times one tries to argue with it ...Jesus didn't ...he commanded it to go and it did...he commanded it to shut its mouth and it did....a true believer has the authority to bind on earth and loose on earth...we are the children of the Most High God.....

Well, In response to the person quoting Acts19:13......those 'vagabonds' were Magicians.....NOT True Christians...Much like the Catholic Priests you see in movies...that must use rosaries....'holy' water and other utterly Non-Biblical methods.....those Demons were not only NOT afraid....they had power over those magicians...If you feel called to cast out demons...Make sure that you are utterly right in the sight of Jesus Christ....Jesus NEVER used 'holy' water or any other 'toys' that catholics and other faiths have used for centuries to 'cast out demons'...Jesus simply said, after being recognized by from one to 'legion' of demons as 'Lord'....Begone....Only through Jesus do we have dominion over demons....If you are in occultic things, ouiji boards, things like that....'magic' games...you are putting yourself in the position to be manipulated by Satan and demons....Read God's Word...the Bible......Pray.....The Lord will guide you my friend...

I am always amused by the soothsayers of Paul's time, who entered a house of one possessed, and said to the devil, "We command you to leave in the name of Jesus whom Paul teaches"
The Devil said unto them "I know Jesus, and I know Paul, but who are you?"
They left the house naked, are running for there lives!
