Pit Bulls were trained and bred to be fighting dogs so it is in there instinct to be aggressive, but it's not totally the breeds fault, you can make the breed not be aggressive you just have to be the dominant one so not all pits are aggressive...

Insight for readers on the breed!
In recent years, pit bulls have gained more than just a foothold in the public awareness. Unscrupulous breeding and negative media attention have resulted in many apartment complexes, neighborhoods and even counties imposing bans on the breed, citing them as "inherently dangerous" to the public.
But did you know that pit bulls, despite the fact that they were originally bred to fight with each other, were also bred to be trustworthy and friendly to people? These dogs actually earned the nickname "nursemaid's dog," because they were so reliable with young children.
Today, however, the breed often attracts the worst kind of dog owners--those who are only interested in them for fighting or protection. It's a shame what has happened to this loyal and affectionate breed-but as the pit bull population has increased so rapidly, shelters are now struggling to deal with an overflow of image-plagued, hard-to-place dogs. And despite its illegality, people are still training and breeding pit bulls to participate in dog fights in cities and towns across the country.

It was'nt so long ago that all you heard was how dangerous Dobermans were.before that it was the German shepherd,St.Bernard,Chow, etc cos the list goes on and on.Pits are just the breed of the moment.
I don't own one and never will. They have way too much energy for me to keep up with and I'm old.But I love the breed. And I can't help but feel that the good responsible owners of these dogs have the responsibility to get their dogs out of the house and into the publics eye.Showing those around you they have no need to fear and explaining to those who care to ask anything and everything you know about the breed and your dogs temperament word will soon spread that it's not the dog it's the owner causing trouble.

Well, people like Jay M are obviously ignorant to the situation. I have owned APBT's for over 40 years, having as many as 50 at a time and raised 4 children in the process. They ARE very family oriented dogs, extremely loyal, able to work, go on runs, hikes, camping trips and never miss a beat. To me they are the ultimate dog and I will never own anything else. None of my children have ever been bit by one, not even a pregnant or nursing female. Jay is correct that some criminal elements are attracted to the pitbulls strength and appearance but that does not place all APBT owners in that category. With over 2 million registered owners in the U.S. the APBT/AmStaff is the most popular breed of dog in our country. The number of criminals who own them is not high and it is the one out of a hundred thousand owners who is irresponsible and neglects, beats or trains their pitbull for aggression. People like Jay would be better off spending their energy putting bad owners of ALL breeds behind bars then blathering on about a breed they obviously know nothing about.

It's a fact that Pit bulls were bred for fighting ... many years ago, but, today ... they are known as loyal, friendly, lovable dogs ... to most people. Ignorant human beings still exist, when it comes to knowing what a Pit Bull is truly like.
Pit Bulls are now, more than ever, being used as Search and Rescue, Therapy, Police K9's and Seeing-eye dogs.
Pit Bulls are a beautiful and proud breed ... IMO ... THEY RULE!!

I too believe it is how an animal is raised that will determine how the animal will behave, however, I watched my neighbors docile pit turn into a killing machine and it scared the Jesus out of me I will never own this breed.
Her Babies were beautiful well behaved animals georges to watch play in her yard, wonderful with her children. I was amazed. Then one day a stray Kitten wandered into her yard and I watched in horror as one of her babies tore that kitten to pieces. Later her grandmother of 80 some years was in their kitchen holding one of her babies a small breed dog and this same pit grabbed her dog from her arms and did the same thing he had done to the kitten.
The final straw came after this dog attacked our other neigbors pit mix and almost killed this old dog..took my neighbor with tears in his old eyes, my husband and my son in law to get the younger pit off,,not once but twice..it took her dog attacking nieghbors little girl and her two children in her yard one afternoon before she removed it from here..she still has the dog God Bless her Children, if it had been up to me Id put it down dogs who attack like that are not safe, god forbid a dog ever attack my child I have a rifle and know how to use it. She had two of standing ready the day those babies cried out..damn luck its still breathing.
Anyway, like I said I believed in good breeding too however sometimes what needs to be looked at is why it was bred in the first place and what will come out in the end. Good Luck to all animal lovers

Here in NC they are breeding pitties left and right. Health and temperment aren't checked and quite a few of these dogs are eventually just flipping out around 2 yrs of age.
We have such a problem with overbreeding here we have one group of all breed shelter composed mainly of pit bull dogs.

It is because people abuse the fact that they stronger than many other dogs to use them as fight dogs. Most people don't know how to treat an animal; which gives them a bad name. I grew up around pits (my uncle was a breeder); at one point we had a total of 21 pits; pups & adults. We were young (11-15yrs old) so we were always running around with the kids in the neighborhood and there was never any incident with the dogs.
A pits bite is very dangerous because of their strong jaw; but technically, it's as dangerous as a chihuahua or a chow-chow. These 2 are very aggressive (BELIEVE IT OR NOT) and their small, thin teeth are very strong and their bite will rip of your skin to the point where it can't be reconstructed.

I have pit-bulls also and mine are not mean. The ones that are mean is simply because their owners beat them and train them to attack people. It haves nothing to do with the breed it's all about how their owners raise them.
