The large bones are ok to give dogs....even my vet does it. It's the small ones, like chicken bones that dogs can choke on or splinter. They could choke on ANYthing, so give the doggie a bone, and make him a happy doggie.

Its simple:
Dogs are carnivores, even after being domesticated for a long time they remain as humans carnivores. So theoretically there should be no problem giving him any kind of bone, EXCEPT:
1) It is chicken or other poultry. Why? Because all birds have hollow bones and they splinter easily. Although my sister does have a miniature pincher and his dinner consists of chicken including the bones, he has never had any problem in 6 years.
2) It is very small compared to his mouth size. Why? It could get stuck in his trachea.
The truth is I have had dogs ALL MY Life, 26 years our family once had 20 dogs in the house and sometimes we fed them real meat with bones and all. We never had a problem. They really enjoy bones, although as some people have said there are sooooooooo many treats out there that there is no need to risk it.

If the bone is large and UNCOOKED it is okay. Boiled, grilled, or roasted bones can splinter and do serious damage to your dog's organs. If you think about, dogs in the wild eat bones all the time, but not ones that have been cooked. You can buy marrow bones from the butcher that are a great special treat for your dog.

As long as it is uncooked, cooking weakens the bone structure and makes it splinter which is then dangerous for your dog to consume. However rib bones are very splintery cooked or not and I wouldnt suggest giving them to your dog...... Also I suggest you supervise the dog closely with any bone in case he/she tries to swallow large pieces etc or starts choking. It would be useful for you to learn how to help a choking dog.... http://tailsawagginonline.com/firstaid.html#Airway
Instead of a rib bone I would suggest a larger soup bone from the grocery store like this... http://www.thepetcenter.com/xra/boneraw1.jpg
You can cook it for a few minutes in boiling water, to brown the meat but don't cook it for long. This kind of bone is large enough for the dog not to be able to actually crack and eat the bone, but they love the meat and marrow.

If your giving your dog a bone, be sure its larger than his mouth. I have Min-Pins, I only buy the larger cattle bones at my meat market.
Never give a round steak bone. They can hang them around the lower jaw.

No it is not ok to give your dog any bones. No chicken bones. No pork bones. No beef bones. They can splinter inside and can do damage. Buy your dog some raw hide, they love chewing on them.

There are hundreds of chew treats made for dogs, specially made NOT to splinter or break off in their throats. They are made for specific size dogs, too, and even special treats for dogs who gulp.
Please don't give animal bones to your dog, especially a small dog. Cooked animal bones will splinter, and lodge in their mouths, throat or stomach. Why risk something that horrible with so many scrumptious treats available that the dogs will enjoy and won't cost you a trip to the vet or jail? Yeah, dogs get bones out of the garbage and eat them, but you are the human, you know better :-)
Pullease don't give a small dog like that a bone thinking it will keep him occupied a while. Dogs die in agony every year "thanks" to stupid owners who don't want to spend time with their pets. Kong makes lots of chew toys, and Ziggies for puppies, which are chew treats that also freshen breath and are perfect for little dogs. Try that instead.
Thanks.

According to my vet, the only bones you should give a dog are soup bones, preferably raw, so they won't splinter in your dog's stomach or intestines. I usually cook mine in water or in the oven because raw ones usually start to smell bad and attract flies.

NO ... you can buy kiln-dried bones for your dog at most pet stores. If you give them chicken bones/beef bones, they stand the chance of either choking on it, or the splinters puncturing their stomach or bowels ... scary business, to say the least.

Any Bone that can be chew in pieces or splinters are not good.. How ever they swallow them is how they go through the whole body system where they can puncture or tears intestines. bowls or plug them up.
