This is an easy question.
I think Americans realize this but they don't want to do it. Americans work hard and they don't generally find much fulfillment in their marriages. They are tired of life and try to get a bit of happiness through food not realizing that they will be unhappy in the long run with their physical problems.
Exercise is not fun and Americans already do enough "not fun" things in their lives. They need more fun not less. They are already exhausted from work. A day of working, house chores and billing paying can't be topped off with exercise. I have the feeling that if Americans didn't have to work, they could maintain their weight and they would exercise.
Additionally, Americans have an economy that leaves a significant portion of its population in poverty. Starches are the cheapest thing to purchase and starches definitely contribute to obesity.

some of do know that. i don't know y we keep having fools who ask the how to lose weight questions again and again... nor do i understand how so many people can let themselves put on disgusting amounts of weight.
it actually kinda sucks to be a healthy weight because i have a great deal of difficulty finding clothes that fit. all the stores seem to think that the waist should be bigger than the inseam of all the jeans that they sell... is it getting to a point where NOT being overweight is a bad thing??

If they can invent a gadget that can make me turn the channel on the tv without me getting off my butt, then they can invent a gadget that can make me skinny without me getting off my butt.
Seriously though, American society is centered around inactivity. Making things easier and with less effort. This is making us fatter while desiring an easier and effortless way to get in shape.

I know what you mean. I have seen questions asking how they can loose weight with out eating right( notice I didin't use the word diet, I dont believe in diet) or excercising. Its like DUH! you can't. Eating right and excercising is essential whether you want to lose, maintain, or even GAIN weight.
