I know my dog understands when I'm sad because if I cry, she comes over to me and puts her head in my lap, licks me and things of the sort. Do you think she understands that when I kiss her head or hug her I'm showing affection or do you think she just tolerates it?

In addition- anybody else have an exceptionally tight bond with their dog?

Yes dogs are VERY smart, they know when you are, mad, sad, excited because they pick up your inner energy in other words it's kinda like there mind readers and they know what state of mind you are in! And I have a SUPER tight bond with my 4 year old Great Pyrenees Belle. She always sleeps in my room at night, and dogs do know when you kiss them or hug them, they know you are showing Affection ^.^

I love my dog to death! However, I'm not sure he understands sadness or happiness. I think he feels more in terms of comfort and discomfort. The noise you make when you cry along with the hormones you're releasing probably are what trigger you dog to comfort you.

As far as affections goes, dogs are very physical. In the wild, they lick and carress each other. When you pet your dog, she feels a sense of physical pleasure, just like you do when someone rubs your back. Although not affection in the sense we think of it, your dog is bonding with you and reinforcing her and your status in your family pack.
