Abdominal exercise with crunches---since you are female? you lack the amount of testesterone required to build up the muscles. If you do Abdominal exercise then you also have to do lower back stregthening muscles since your Back muscles support you stomach muscles. The modified sit-ups are great for the abdomen-you only raise your head from the floor and clasp hands behing your head(Not the neck-for if you do sore neck) and then do abdominal work----situps all the way to floor and then sitting straight up not good for the back

Do leg ups hoizontal leg crunches and side bends....all those exersices help the muscles in the abdominal section...just limit yourself and the amount of reps. But before you get tones..do cardio and fat loss...you can work on your abs all you want but if you have a gut no ones gonna ever see them.

Cardio is great to tone abs (and everything else) and doing a few crunches will give you faster results.

Sit in a straight backed chair - take a broom stick and hold behind your head on your neck, holding the arms bent at the elbows "L" holding with hands. Now slowly turn to your left and then to your right as far as you can go each time. Do this for the count of twenty. Then bend forward far as you can go keeping your back straight then come back up leaning slightly back and do this twenty times. Now bend to the left far as you can go, back straight at all times, now bend right. 20 times. Put the stick down and sit straight and imagine that you have a suit case on floor next to you on both side. Bend again keeping the back straight and imagine grabbing the handle of the case and imagining and feeling the weight of the heavy case come up to center and now reach for the other case and repeat.

regular cardio workouts ie ellipticals, bikes, stairclimbers or an aerobic class will help tone and shrink with out giving you the muscle cut of abs such as a six pack.

Cardio and crunches - don't worry, it's really very difficult for women to get six-packs.
