Ramadan is a Muslim holiday and is observed in the ninth lunar month in the Muslim lunar calendar. It is believed that in this month that the Qu'ran was revealed to the prophet Mohammad.

During Ramadan, Muslims all over the world restrain themselves from:

food
drink
sexual contact and intercourse
smoke

The fast is done during daylight hours for 30 days.

What most people don't know is that Ramadan is more than refraining from food and drink, but the follower must not partake in gossip, unlawful activities or thoughts. Worshippers must not look at unlawful things. Of course, those who are ill or small children do not fast.

Ramadan is basically the spiritual cleansing of the soul through self restraint.

Ramadhan is a month in Muslim calender and Muslims fast during day time from sunrise to sunset during this month. The reason for fasting is that it is the month Prophet started receiving Quran.

Main reason for Muslims to fast is that Allah has made it obligatory.

"The month of Ramadan is that in which the Quran was revealed, a guidance to men and clear proofs of the guidance and the distinction; therefore whoever of you is present in the month, he shall fast therein, and whoever is sick or upon a journey, then (he shall fast) a (like) number of other days; Allah desires ease for you, and He does not desire for you difficulty, and (He desires) that you should complete the number and that you should exalt the greatness of Allah for His having guided you and that you may give thanks. " Quran 2:185.

Other benefits of fasting, like knowing the hunger of poor, medical benefits of fasting etc may be there but the intention of a Muslim is to earn Allah's pleasure by obeying his order. Like mentioned in the above verse those who are sick are exempted from fasting. Also, all food and drinks including water should not be taken while fasting.

Having meals just before dawn and breaking the fast as soon as sunset is required for fasting person. Also, most Muslims pray a special prayer, which takes around 1 hour during ramadhan night,.

No educated or civilized person gives one damn about Islam, Muhammad, or Allah. In fact i keep a copy of the Koran in my kitchen so I can tear out a page to clean up the grease that spills with I cook bacon. Then I wad it up and throw it away.
