It all depends. You'll most likely have to talk to a therapist for a while and it'll be his call to put you on any meds. Going to a mental hospital is a bit extreme, but I highly recommed that you go talk to someone.

I have a lot of experience with this. I never cut, but my sister and best friend/boyfriend did too. If you tell a friend nothing may happen, or something could. The best thing to do is to talk to your doctor, or another person you trust and try to get help. I know that my sister ( a surface horizontal cutter) talked to a therapist, and eventually she learned new coping skills, and didn't do it anymore. As far as my best friend, well he didn't just cut, he cut really bad. He had to be rushed to the ER 2 times because of it. He lost a ton of blood. My sister was okay, never had to go to the hospital, and just suffered from depression. My friend well, he is diagnosed Bipolar although I'm pretty sure he has a Borderline Personality Disorder. Becasue he's attempted suicide, is such a bad alcoholic, and had such bad wounds, they had him commited to a mental hospital for 10 days (the second time). If it's not that bad, it'll be easier to get help and learn other coping skills. I would really suggest you get help. Most likely nothing will happen, but you really should get it taken care of. Therapy is the first step, possibly medication, but they'll only do that if they feel that talking won't be enough. Normally meds are temporary for this type of thing. Of course every situation is different, so don't think that they're going to put you on meds, or that they're not going to. Keep an open mind, they really do simply want to help you. Remember no matter what, no matter how horrible, depressed, or angry you feel it WILL get better, it's just really hard to tough it out until you feel better.

You'll have found someone to talk to and then you should also tell responsible adult(if you're child) to get some therapy for cutting is not being to cope with feelings or not being able to relieve high levels of stress--and therapy will help you to find better ways to cope. This is not something you should feel ashamed for doing for there are many others doing what you are and those that got better realized they needed professional help. If you are an adult or anyone can (even teen) call the County Community Service Board-in the blue pages of the phone book or 411-very caring people and they will listen and advise where you can find help. This is not punishable by Jail or juvenile for you are hurting yourself not someone else. If a person attempts suicide then that is against the law and the court will order a Psychoanalysis but NOT for Cutting.

¡¿What will happen?¡ you will get a reaction on many diferent leves depending how close is to you that person , is this person your parents, family, friends or some one who do you think will be come friends with?
Because if it is your parents they will go nuts about that, no parent can handle the idea that their kids get hurt much less that their own kid can get hurt by himself. Now days many kids think that if they do drugs, drinking alcohol, sexual intercourse or self mutilation can get parents atention or hurt them that way, but what it is worse that that those kids only get diseases, adictions, or even losing their own lives (they become their only victims).
if it is your family or friend problaly they get worry about you and would like to help you any way they can, because that what does family and friends they help each other.
and if it is a some one not so familiar.....sweety do not take ofense on this but I am pretty sure, they will think that you are no doing very well with your pretty head.
And now why do not you make your self this questions, in the first place why do you want to say that to any one at all? what do you expect from the other person reaction? what do you gain by doin that? if you can answer your self this question with honesty, you might get what are you looking for.
On my behalf if you need help, ask for it!, theres no shame on that, You are not alone.
Do not just live, thrive!!

Mental Health is extremely pro-active these days. Much of what will happen depends on what you want to happen. If you are cutting because you need to get away from where you are and want to be hospitalized that will happen. If on the other hand you feel compelled to cut yourself, with no intention of killing yourself you will most likely see a psychologist to try to figure out the reasons you are wanting to cut yourself. I use the term cut, as opposed to hurt yourself for a reason. Some people who cut themselves need to feel the pain to feel alive , instead of actually trying to hurt or kill themselves. Also some do it just for attention. Regardless of why you do it, you should tell someone trustworthy, and seek the assistance you deserve to be happy.

If it was just a self mutilation thing, nothing will happen. They won't put you away for that. If you try to commit suicide, they WILL put you away. If you do self mutilation, it's obviously caused depression. Self mutilation is a "learned" behavior. One day you were upset about something you might have accidentally hurt yourself and realized it made whatever pain you were feeling emotionally was being "washed away" by the physical pain. When people are cutters, they're told to wear a rubber band on their wrist and when something upsets them to the point they want to cut, they snap the rubber band. it's an evasive therapy. you should also go to a psychiatrist for anti depressants if psychotherapy doesn't work. try therapy first and see if that works for ya.

chances are someone will try to "help" you, but whether you really want this help or are ok with how you are is up to you. This said "help" might not be that great, so don't get your hopes up if you want help. If you really do though, tell someon who will take action. Some people will keep your secret, so be sure which you want to tell. And just know that you're not alone in cutting yourself, and hopefully the reaction won't be too negative.

It depends on who you tell. Some people might assume you are suicidal and over-react. Others might just think you are trying to get attention. Both would most likely be wrong. Perhaps you could start by calling an anonymous help line, such as Samaritans, to get started. Or look for a friend with scars and tell her.

If you are a cutter I would suggest that you get some help as soon as possible. Self mutilation is not a good thing. You need help and you need it now. Please do yourself a favor and see either a Therapist or a Psychiatrist as soon as possible for some help.

You need to tell someone and get the help that you need before you really hurt yourself. You will probably just have psychotherapy and be put on some medication to help with depression or whatever is causing you to do this to yourself.
