I have noticed of late many ladies wearing their wedding and engagement rings either on the right or left hand. I had always thought the left hand was customary. Can anyone explain the diference please ?
Best wishes, Rose P.

Just a thought, eternity rings? No, no maternity.

Wildstar has it right. Some people may also be wearing rings of sentimental value from a grandparent on their right hand. I experienced this situation with a girl who had taken me shopping in Germany because she didn't speak the language and I did. She was wearing her grandmother's rings. The shop staff thought we were newlyweds and congratulated me while she was trying on the clothes. Interesting experience with laughs all around but no fringe benefits.

The only time an engagement ring is worn on the right hand is when the bride walks down the aisle at her wedding. This way, after the wedding band is placed on her left ring finger during the ceremony, she can replace the engagement ring in the customary order without removing the band.

In England, both the engagement ring and wedding ring are worn on the left hand. There are some countries where the rings are worn on the right hand but I do not know the name of these countries.

It is to be worn on the left hand. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. The rings you are seeing on the right hand that look like engagement rings are actually called "right hand rings" and are just meant for that reason only. Go to a jewelry store sight such as kay.com and you'll find the "right hand ring". I know its silly but I think it all got started with a spin off of Sarah Jessica Parker on "Sex in the City"

I wear my rings on the left hand. I think people who wear a ring on the right ring finger are more promise rings, from their boyfriends. But engagement or weddings are for the left hand.

I heard that long ago they believed that the vein that runs to the left ring finger runs directly to the heart or is closest, so that's why wedding rings are worn on the left hand.
