When people are afraid they pay more money. Most religions teach that the soul or spirit is some invisible part of a human that survives the death of the physical body. By means of this teaching many of these religions exploit their members, charging money to pray for the departed souls.
Some widow women would pay a lot to get her much loved husband out of pregatory. They go visit widows and if they leave everything to the church they are sure to go to heaven.
The only thing is God doesn't get the money they do.
Since you can't come back from the dead no one can say whether it helped or not. These religious organizations are wealthy. How do you think they got that way.

Obviously there's an appropriate way to preach about Hell and an inappropriate way. One doesn't want the gospel message obscured by fire and brimstone. You don't want to scare people off. But Hell is a reality and a good pastor needs to warn the flock about it. There's a reason why the apostle Paul counseled people to work out their salvation in fear and trembling. At the same time remain hopeful in the promises of Christ and rely on His grace to be faithful to the gospel.

I have not met any of those pastors.... and I have been in ministry with hundreds of pastors for years... I don't know what kind of church you are going to, but I suggest a change. A good pastor will preach a balanced message, preaching all the Bible. He should be talking about heaven as much as hell. He should be talking about Jesus and what He wants you to do withyour life. Jesus did speak more about hell than heaven, so it is OK, as long as you also speak about other things too

Both should be talked about. They do it because the mere thought of someone going to hell hurts them so deeply that theu fell compelled to tell everyone so they can avaoid it. Even though this is Humanistic preaching for mans happiness instead on preaching to love God even if you go to hell. I understand why they do it so much. THEY LOVE YOU.

thank you! ever since jonathon edwards' horrifying oratory "sinners in the hands of an angry God" (okay, probably long before that) there seems to be an emphasis, not on pleasing God, but getting the best deal out of Him. i'm a southern baptist, but i get sick of all this fire & brimstone. i feel sure that God wants people to love him sincerely, not just be afraid of the consequences.

you know that part
when the pastor
stands at the front door
and shakes your hand
as you leave?

that's just a break for lunch.
you're supposed to go back
for part 2

THAT'S when he
talks about god

--been wondering
what happened to you
all those afternoons you didn't return

Especailly since no one except Satan is going to hell, in the end, non-believers will go to the lake of fire, not hell. Different place.

You are absolutely right.
You will not grow very much if you are always afraid of hell.
Once Born-Again, forget about hell and continue in your Love for the Truth (GOD).
And Grow.
