Unfortunately with todays malware it is important to use a whole battery of programs to get adequate protection. These are my recommendations, all of which are free but still excellent products:

Antivirus:

Avast (Free) : http://www.avast.com

Antitrojan:

Ewido (14 day trial but excellent so had to include) - http://www.ewido.net/en/

Antispyware/antiAdware:

Spybot Search and Destroy - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Tutorial for spybot: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial43.html

Lavasoft Ad-aware SE Personal - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

SpywareBlaster - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

Tutorial for spywareblaster: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial49.html

The Microsoft Antispyware: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Firewall:

Kerio Free: http://www.kerio.com/kpf_download.html

And a tutorial on good practices on staying safe on the internet:

If you think you may be still infected after using the below programs and want an expert to help you for free, you can post a hijackthis log at my forum. Instructions for doing so can be found here:

Hope this helps.

There's a lot of spyware programs out there that should keep your computer relatively free of spies. Reinstalling your operating system is another way, but you will lose any files/documents, etc. that you do not back up onto a CD.

The only way to completely remove spyware is to format your computer.
The realistic way to remove it [although not removing ALL spyware in most situations] is to use software such as Webroot SpySweeper.
