Yes if it is a US issued debit card with either a MasterCard or Visa symbol and supports address verification. Debit cards are protected by EFTA and by Visa and MasterCard's zero liability policy. Atm/debit cards without a MasterCard or Visa symbol are protected by EFTA only. Any bank that does not follow this can be sued. Some debit cards require activation before you can use them internationally.

Debit cards should only be used at ATM machines! There are sad stories of checking accounts being emptied out when one uses a debit card out in the public rather than a credit card. Be careful!

I used paypal for purchases, and all I had was a checking account and a debit card. I can't remember if I used one, the other, or both.

Yes, same as a credit card but with more risks if misused. And of course the money comes out of your account rather than a bill each month.
