i have a schnauzer that does that too... jump up and down and bark i mean. Isn't that soo..... welcoming??!!! Anyway, to stop the nibbling, next time he does it, cringe and make a loud noise like when you step on his toes by mistake (they are small and always show up under your foot by mistake). This shows them that the action of nibbling hurts and isn't to be done regularly. If he continues to do that, look at him and point and say "NO" while he looks at you. You can tap your thigh to let him jump up but encourage the "NO" when necessary. It is important to let him know, however, that you don't mind the jumping or barking just the nibbling. remember, "no" then pat the thigh so he knows jumping to say hello is okay.

Funny, the shih tzu does the same thing. Now the 90 pound boxer, he stomps but doesnt nibble. If he did, I'd be missing a few typing fingers for sure!
Your pup does that because he's happy. What don't you like about it--the jumping? The nibbling? It's like a hug-n-kiss with humans---if you don't like him jumping on you, use the "shaker bottle method"--a few pennies in an empty aspirin bottle (etc) and you shake it at bad behavior and say NO quite firmly. It'll startle him and reinforce the NO all at the same time. Works like a charm after 2-3 times.

You don't mind the barking and jumping, but the nibbling bothers you??? I'm sorry, that's a new one for us. Your little guy is trying desperately to make loving contact with you. I've had pit bulls and mastiffs and terriers all do this, and we get a kick out of it. They can't hug us or pat us, so they nibble. He loves you, honey!!
If you absolutely can't stand it, put some Bitter Yuck on your hands to make them taste bad. But I would be very happy to have someone love me that much, and be glad to see me.

That happens here. We have two schnauzers and the female is the more hyper of the two when somebody comes in after being gone for a while. The key is to empty your hands of purse, brief case, or whatever and sit down to pet them PRONTO! My male is excited, but he is patient to wait. Some of your answerers just don't understand SCHNAUZERS :)

2 years is like a teenager age for dogs, you just need to discipline him by saying no in a firm voice, and be in a dominant state of mind when disciplining him. I would take him for walks so all the pent up energy doesn't come all out when you come home. I hope that helps!

the best thing is to ignore your pet when you come home. Don't even acknowledge them with a look. Dogs are very good at reading body language. Just come into the house as if they weren't there. Don't look at your dog and say "Hiya, Spike! Did you miss me?" To a dog, thats just as good a reward as petting them.
Wait until your pet calms down then go ahead and give them attention. It might take awhile to stop the habit but eventually they'll be more calm when you come home.

you should be honored! He's giving you love nibbles & is so glad to see & have you home. Why change him?
As for the jumping, just put your hand down when he jumps & tell him down or no, pushing him down.. But, be sure to give him lots of TLC greetings back in return.

Watch the Dog Whisperer on tv, Cesar Milan has great ideas to get dogs to behave. You must be the pack leader.

It's a dog's natural habit. It doesn't matter about his age. Me dog does that too!
