Urban renewal was a big thing in the 60s... Especially in more industrialized areas... It was a period where US manufacturing was declining sharply and cities wanted an image to reflect their shifted economies... Everything old was bad so in many places older, detailed buidings were razed to make way for things that looked modern and futuristic... keep in mind it was also a time of great advances in space exploration and that was influencing everything whether people knew it or not....
Most people were looking towadrs what they thought the future would be. So really anyone who was building something at the time is to blame... Big companies, city governments, and individuals alike

I know what you mean. Have you ever seen a school that was designed in the 60s? UGH! Seriously those buildings are already being torn down now while the beautiful schools from the 20's and earlier are being 'renovated'. I can't explain it myself because I was born in 1975 but I notice it all the time.

The 3 big buildings built in Chicago during the sixties are all very cool looking: Marina City, Lake point Tower, and the John Hancock Center.

someday, someone is going to make a film about architechture at the turn of the 21st century and someone will ask, "could anyone really have thought that those designs were attractive?"
our times define our desires and times change.
no one wanted 80's fashion back and yet it found it's way in the fashion circuit again.

Sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll !
