You know that the Holy Spirit is talking to you when you experience the fruits of the Holy Spirit:
1. Charity
2. Joy
3. Peace
4. Patience
5. Benignity
6. Goodness
7. Long-suffering (patient suffering over an extended period)
8. Mildness
9. Faith
10. Modesty
11. Continency
12. Chastity
Sometimes God speaks to you audibly, sometimes in a dream, or sometimes through friends, strangers, or events in your life.

For me........
It's like one's conscience...an inner voice but not quite your own thoughts. That "still small voice" pretty well captures it. Sounds weird. An example perhaps.
The church was organizing a theatrical presentation for the community. I'm a bit of an introvert and have always abhorred drama. The pastor comes on stage and announces something like 18 people have bailed on them for this presentation. A voice says, "What are YOU doing Friday?" (rehearsal) I was taken aback but thought of it during the service and, afterwards, though feeling a bit foolish, volunteered.
I had a blast. It was wonderful.
I hesitate to describe the audible but I'm not sure why. I'll be labeled a nut case but I couldn't care less. God bless 'em all. I'm not here to impress anyone.
It's only happened once. It was over two years ago and I stilll cannot recall it with a dry eye. I was praying for guidance as to whether I should remain where I was or move across the country. Mid sentence there was two of us talking. Let me tell you I shut up. Just as loud and clear as if He was standing beside me in the room. My God. My God.
I sat there about 5 minutes in stunned silence.
Why me? I don't know. I'm nobody special. I'll never be the same, though. That's why I can tell you He's alive and well and He hears every word of your prayer.

Every relationship is unique, and your relationship with God is unique also. And how God speaks to you through the Holy Spirit will be something you will learn and grow in as time goes on, the way any relationship grows.
The fact that you are listening is good. Be patient. You'll know when it's God.
For me, often it's something I'm as sure of as a recent memory, but it's new. It's something I'm as familiar with as my own name, but I've never thought it before. It's as real as anything I could be aware of. Sometimes it confirms a direction I was leaning toward, sometimes it takes me in a direction I never would have imagined.
In the end, it really is as simple as, 'you just know'.

The Holy Spirit speaks to people in many ways. He speaks through the Word of God as you read the Bible. He speaks as you spend time praying, as strong impressions to your mind. He may even speak to you through other people and what they say will click with your spirit so that you know it is The Spirit speaking to you. When the Holy Spirit speaks, He never contradicts the Word of God. He always lifts up Jesus. He is never negative or demeaning. He always leads you to the truth.

It can be all that.
Me lately...i lost my job...my car engine blew and the car got impounded...i have an application in EVERYWHERE and no responce...this is three weeks. I am working for people who cant pay just for free doing things they need done, I'm mind and muscle pretty much, just cause I cant stay still I gotta work EVERYDAY....but in this time I have started a church library, witnessed to many people, learned Gospel music on my guitar, Quit smoking all together, been blessed with this laptop that was collecting dust in a garage, a 27 inch TV that was getting thrown out, A TRAILER HOUSE 64 ft in great shape to be moved onto this lot of my family's, and thats just the material part for physical proof....still no car or job by the way, The wittnessing is involuntary...i dont want to be a minister, i wanna smoke cigarettes drink beer and play my guitar.....make a lot of money in the oilfield and LIVE IT UP....but, i cant pass up the opportunity to do good by conviction of the HOLY SPIRIT...
today i was with a buddy at wal-mart and could not walk passed a cart in the parking lot. AND I TRIED! James 5:17 kept jumping out at me, and I DO NOT read the bible daily, hardly ever, but the words were as clear as day in my soul consuming my every thought...
there is a lot of things that have happened to me these last 3 weeks....now i am really considering going back to college and just shooting for a part time job... and devoting most of my time to ministry.
But heres the thing. That means a POOR life for me. I have this thing about all the work I do unto the Lord is absolutely FREE so I could never...in my frame of mind be a career minister, but i can be very functional in them community....long story short, God is Parking me to do His will, and The Holy Spirit is convicting me of trying to get out of it.
I was in Victoria theother day, Heard that a few places were hiring...good pay. Cant find my wallet w/ my ss card and driversliscence in it...so I cant get hired w/o these things. I TRIED. They ARE hiring, but I cant find my wallet anywhere and I have NEVER lost my wallet before....who else can I blame for strangers telling me in the middle of a conversation that I need to get into the ministry? Who do I blame for getting a BIG traffic ticket two months ago but for some reason they have no record of it? Who gets the credit for al these blessings?and when I am at the lowest I have ever been.
It will all add up. If you are asking the question it is because you know....the Holy Spirit is speaking to you al the time...we just have to slow down ourselves and listen.
The still smal voice.
Praise God! Jesus LIVES!

It's a thought in my mind, along with a general feeling of peace. If it's a question about something then it's me thinking. If it's an answer it's the Holy Spirit speaking.

Spend some time listening, God loves it when you say, "OK God I'm listening and I am not in a hurry to leave you." I have found that asking a question that you need answered desperately will often get the strongest responses. Because He cares most about what is very important to you. The big question is this, How much time out of your life is hearing God's voice worth to you? Dedicate time to Him. You will not be disappointed. Good Luck.

I can tell you that God still speaks today! I am living proof of it! God speaks in a variety of ways. He speaks through his word, he speaks through Godly leaders and friends in our lives. But the most personal way he speaks is the thoughts that come. I just start writing and God just writes with my hand. I know it sounds weird, but after I am finished I will go an re-read what I have written and it will be amazing, things I never would have thought on my own. Just trust and know that he is God. We are his sheep and we know his voice the voice of a stranger we will not follow.

The Bible says He speaks in a still small voice, but I don't hear a voice exactly. It's not a physical voice anyway. For me it's more like a knowing. When it first occurs, you don't know for sure if it's what you hope it is. Just keep listening with your heart. Remember that God will never speak anything to you that contradicts the Bible and that is the best test of whether or not what you hear is only what you want to hear or what God is telling you.

that is a very hard question to answer, because everyone prays to god in there own way, but you must of course close your eyes, be quiet, inside yourself, in a quiet place, develope a faith first. the type of faith a mustard seed has, that type of faith is total faith without ANY dought, in romans it says it is a sin to dought, go to god with a childs open pure faith, pray. ask god a question, should I go with this man? sell a house, how I can get closer to you god. any question you wont to ask, then,,,, listen inside yourself, in your mind and your heart, there actually will be a very very quiet voice that will tell you the answer, it is something you have to practice, with faith, every one hears the voice of the spirit inthere own way, my parents were thinking about selling there home, one year I saw then both get on there knees, looked at each other., no words, they did nt put up a for sell sign did that a number of times, then, I was there, they got off the floor, dad walked out, put up the sign, a lady came by in three hours and said she wonted the house,!!I could tell you story after story, you have to experiance it for your self but the spirit of god IS there in you, listen, you will hear it IF you have faith. I go door to door sales, saw a turtle in the road, the spirit said pick it up. the next house the lady walked by my truck ow you have a box turtle, my son loaned his friend his turtle and he lost it, would you give him your turtle.even in the little things. gods spirit is with us,
