I just got an invite from a good friend for her to train me in sword fighting. She's a year older then I (17), but started when she was 9. Its all unoffical, but I know from a few bruises the last time we were playing around she's very good. Is it smart to study something from an amateur who has never had real training?

Another question about actual sword fighting....

I'm over weight....and out of shape. She's already got me to promice to start running, but I need to know if I should even began if my weight is going to be a major major problem...

Overweight/out of shape seriously hampers your endurance, but the best way to work on that is by doing something. Running is fine, but swordfight, too.

Pay some attention to safety. If you're using anything light, then for heaven's sake have face protection, or at least eye protection. Doesn't have to be anything fancy. If you're working heavier, edge-only swords (e.g., shinai), then just don't thrust, and you'll be fine.

As to studying from an amateur, well, if she knows more than you do, you can profit from playing around with her. It's not the same thing as serious study, but everybody's got to start somewhere.

My wall is covered with swords I no longer train with. There were benefits to the training, despite that we don't go about with swords in this day, but ultimately we all have limited time in our days, and it was more important to me to maintain my weaponless combat skills in what time I had away from work and family.

I assume you are fighting with shinai (bamboo swords) or you'd have amputations instead of bruises, but even so you should have the proper gear and a proper teacher to supervise, otherwise I'd find another activity. Your weight, unless it is extreme, is only an issue for your endurance and that will improve with any exercise. Just move and go and do.

You say that she has been swordfighting for several years but that she has never had any training? What kind of swordfighting is that? Are talking about light weapons fighting from the SCA? If so, there's nothing to stop you and you could get some good exercise, but you have to take all the proper safety precautions, and don't confuse it with actual swordfighting.

Obviously, if you are being bruise... she is a bad teacher. I wouldnt do it. Just because someone has done something for years.. does not mean she is a good teacher.

What type of sword fighting? Also, why learn sword fighting, when no one today carries a sword? I would learn aikido or karate or something if I were you.

I enjoy sword art very much, and I think you will enjoy too. So far, I learn sword art from my aikido classes but I wish that someday I could join a kendo club. I think you should go for it.

I personally think that you should just run and work out with her until you loose weight. If that is what you really want to do. But good luck to whatever you will do in the future!

I think you should go for it, but just be cautious. And don't worry about your weight. The exercise will help you to lose some
