Start out with the small or slim-fit plastic applicator tampons (they're smaller and easier to use if you're new to using tampons). I've always used playtex gentle glide - for some reason they're much easier to insert.
Once you have the tampon in properly - you shouldn't even feel it at all - if you do feel something or it's uncomfortable - than it means the tampon is not all the way in. I know this may sound wierd - but if you're having trouble getting them in properly - try placing a bit of KY jelly lubricant over the applicator.
Tampons are perfectly safe and they're much less messy than pads. These days I ONLY use tampons - and I couldn't imagine life without them :)
You should only leave them in for about 4-6 hours. My protocol is that I just change them when I regularly go to the bathroom. You CAN also leave them in overnight - and again - it's so much more comfortable than a messy pad.

You should see the directions. If you have ever douched, it's pretty much the same thing. It also depends on what kind of tampon you buy. Tampax Pearl is really comfortable and slides in easy. You'll remove the plastic cover and then you'll notice the tampon applicator. It's one stick but you can see where there are two parts. One side is the part you insert and the other side has the tampon string. You'll insert the tampon in your vagina and when it gets almost or at least half way, you'll the other end of the tampon forward. Make sure you don't push the whole tampon in. You just want to push the stick forward. Then you'll remove the other end and you're done. If I were you, I'd open a tampon and just practice. Just push it forward and see what it does. Don't stick it in, just try one and see what it's supposed to look like. I'd just practice w/one first. It's scary but it's more convenient. I'd change my tampon depending on how heavy your period is. One my first and second days, I'm heavy so I change it every 4 hours. Then on my other days, I change it every 6 or so hours. Don't leave it in toooooooooooo long. You might get toxic shock syndrome! I hope this helps you

Insert into vagina and once in shouldn't feel at all-leave string out-if heavy flow change approx 2x's or if you notice odor change sooner--if light 1x's day do not leave in more than 24hrs for danger is it can move too far up and then difficult to remove---There should be no discomfort and definitely no pain-if there is switch to thinner or get checked by a doctor to make sure all is OK--there should be directions on the pamphlet that comes inside the package-standard procedure---that explains step by step how to use a tampon read and follow.

Tampons are not as safe as Pads, and u should change often so u will not get toxic shock syndrome.
insert takes awhile to get use to at first, relax and they will glide in . It feels like it is not even there , but remember that string and to change often as u pee.

All of the information is on the box.
However..don't leave it in for more than 4 hours..
and wearing a pad to bed is definitely best.

You have to go on the Internet and ask that in front of the entire world? That is sad. Don't you have a mom, good friend or someone reliable, instead of strangers? Most of those answers should be on the packaging except how it should feel, and that one is different for each woman. Good luck.
