Once you have washed and dried the sateen cotton sheets a few times they become softer. They are also more durable than egyptian cotton. The egypian cotton pills after about the third washing. The thread count may be the same in both but sateen's weave is tighter which in turn makes them the better sheet.
And as far as expensive in the US yes but you can order them from overseas for about 1/3 of what you pay for here.

Egyptian cotton is softer but not as durable. It has a tendency to peel. The sateen will get softer with use. Mind you 1000 count is way too much for everyday use. A good in expensive count is in the 600 range. You can get good quality selection from Marshalls or TJ Maxx for about $60. You should think about keeping 3 sets on hand to make your supply last longer. One on the bed, one in the laundry and one in the cabinet. This will get you at least 6 years wear, given that you launder them. A while back sheets used to be pressed to help them wear longer. Now we should wash them like fine washables to help them last.
