My Papillon started becoming lathargic after our trip up north in July. He also began growling at me and the rest of the family, as though he did not know who we were. The growling fits typicallly occur in the evening hours. It has been two months, and he became extremely ill. He went into the hospital because he was vomitting, diahrea, latharic behavior, still growling, clear uring, and would not eat. Blood tests indicated his kidney levels were 6x normal. Intervenous fluids reversed the symptoms and he was sent home. Within 12 hours, he relapsed and became ill again. More x-rays, cbc, blood tests, acid bile test, and a test w/ dye through digestional track was done. OVerall, he seemed to be doing better at the vet and he was sent home. However, this is his first night now, and he is still growling and unaware of who I am for periods of time.
Please help, my son has been sick and the vets can't match his symptoms with a diagnosis, and obviously he isn't getting better. I am worried!

Has anyone thought to test the little guy for Lyme disease? Sounds like he got infected by a tick during your trip, which can cause all the problems you listed. Surely they tested him for this??? (altho after reading this forum, I'm amazed by what vets miss.)

This would be my suggestion. A regular tick in a strategic place can make them disoriented and nuts. Lyme disease can do all the above. Good luck to you and the little butterfly dog, and change vets if you need to.

The best thing to do would be to get a second opinion...humans do this all the time when they are sick and having trouble getting a diagnosis...they have every right to do that and so do you...you are in no way saying that your vet is not doing a good job, you just want a second opinion....I am a vet technician, and our clinic refers and does second opinions from other clinics all the time...collect all the blood values, x-rays and doctors records and get a second opinion or request a refural to a university, if that is the avenue that you want to take...there are so many questions that need answering...how long were the fluids given, what other meds were tried, what go-home instructions were given and were they followed, what were the blood values...did they improve after fluid therapy...what was seen on urinalysis, could it be genetic, congenital...and alot more...please remember that only a doctor has the legal right to diagnose a disease and that taking the uneducated opinions of others over that could be lethal to your pet...good luck...

Where did you take him up north? Was he exposed to other dogs or any wild animals? Did you take him hiking in the woods or in an open high feild? Did he have acess to a stream, river or lake water? The reason why I ask is he might be exposed to Lepto., Lime Disease, (maybe west nile) or even Rocky MT. Spotted Fev.? I'm not a vet and I don't know what his chem.s came back at. 6x normal ( above normal or below normal?)

Is his growling more of a moaning or aggression (where he snaps or shows his teeth?).

I would go get a second opion. Obv. you dog is uncomfrotable and not happy. See another vet and fill them in. I am sorry your puppy is not well, check out those options I listed and see what symptoms match, and tell your vet about it or your second opion vet about them. (they have a ton to remember and I don't think they would intentionally over look things.... thats why is a good idea to get second opinion)

I wish you the best of luck, but I think a second veternary opion would be your best bet.

The reason for him acting like he doesn't know you, is probably because he is sick, he is probably out of it. I say take him to another vet and let them keep the dog until he is completely healed, make sure to visit it regularly though, so he doesn't feel abandoned, It sounds like it could be parvo or a tick disease, that can be extremely serious so get a second opinion ASAP.

In some ways he sounds like a pet with a seizure disorder. But other symptoms reminded me of a dog we had at our hospital with distemper or even a liver shunt. Sorry I can't say more w/out actually viewing your whole case. Hope your pet was vaccinated. I do wish you well.

Sounds like the little dog has a real problem. Try another vet, and best of luck to you and your dog. Papillons are so cute and fun when they're healthy.

This proves it. Rather then go to another vet this dropcase comes on here and asks a bunch of know nothings for their opinion.

Stupidity apparently is more common place then I originally believed.

Maybe he's getting sick of you. Just kidding. Have a second opinion, go to another vet.
