Four-vehicle accident claims young teacher

Car caught between two potato trucks
ALAMOSA — A young teacher in the gifted and talented program at Sangre de Cristo elementary school died when her car was crushed between two potato trucks Tuesday night on Alamosa County Lane 5.
Kelly Bergen, 25, of Monte Vista, Colo. was killed when her Ford Focus was hit from behind by a potato truck driven by Oscar Martinez-Cruz, 27, of Monte Vista and then pushed into another potato truck being towed by a tractor.
Martinez-Cruz was arrested and charged with careless driving causing death, driving a motor vehicle without a valid operator’s license and failure to present evidence of insurance. The operator of the second potato truck, Miguel Ramirez, 54, of Greeley, Colo. and the driver of the tractor, Bernardo Garcia, 55, of Hereford, Texas have not been charged in the accident.
Martinez-Cruz is currently being held at the Alamosa County Detention Center on charges related to the accident. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Special Agent-in-Charge Ed Tolbert of the Alamosa ICE office, confirmed Wednesday that Martinez-Cruz is an undocumented Mexican national working in the U.S. illegally and the agency has placed a detainer hold on him.
Colorado State Patrol Trooper Travis S. DePriest investigated the accident that happened around 7 p.m. Tuesday on County Lane 5 North, about one-tenth of a mile east of Alamosa County Road 102 South. According to the trooper’s report, all four vehicles were westbound on County Lane 5 North with Bergen’s Ford behind Ramirez’s potato truck that was being towed by the tractor driven by Garcia. As Bergen’s car approached the truck and tractor it was hit from behind by the truck driven by Martinez-Cruz and pushed 106 feet, rotating clockwise in front of Martinez-Cruz’s truck. Both the car and truck then slammed into the rear of the truck being towed and pushing it into the rear of the tractor. The tractor left the right side of the roadway and struck a power pole and came to rest in a field facing northwest. Bergen’s car came to rest in the westbound lane of County Lane 5 North, facing north and still attached to the front of potato truck driven by Martinez-Cruz.

You really do your homework don't you,I don't know how you come across all of it,you must surf all day but good,it's time that people see the human cost of illegal immigration. It could happen to any truck driver is I'm sure what some apologists will say or something equally stupid,but since he was illegal and apperantly unlicensed we have no idea whether he even was properly trained. So everybody there's another one of those "jobs Americans won't do" filled by an illegal alien and all it cost was a human life. By the way truck driving is a good paying job Americans will do for any that could miss the sarcasm,I know I am one and they pay me quite well and it never caused anyone to die.

You know something? I get the same reaction whenever I post a CREDIBLE NEWS SOURCE citing what some of these illegal criminals do! People get so upset when you post the truth about illegals from Mexico. Why is that? Keep posting......good job.
This idiota was in the country illegally. He didn't have a license (big surprise) He didn't have insurance (typical) He didn't have ANY right to be here on ANY AMERICAN ROAD. All he had was a job, someone else's job, that he was apparently pretty bad at because he killed someone doing it. And some people want to be offended because you posted this? What a bunch of morons! How many laws do you have to break before they consider you a criminal? How many lives do you have to take before people realize what the main problem is?

I was actually on the phone with Kelly when she was killed. She wouldn't appreciate people using this to take aim at illegal immigrants. And no, being on the phone had nothing to do with the accident - she had set the phone on the passenger seat, had it on speaker and was diligently waiting for her that was coming up so she could go to Monte Vista and get dinner at Sonic. To be exact, her accident happened at 6:59:45. How do I know? She called me at 645 and the call ended 14:45 seconds later.

It's unfortunate, but all kinds of people are involved in and cause car accidents. Not just Mexicans or illegal immigrants.
Everyone has their own views on the current immigration situation, and that's fine. But you are just hateful and racist. It's more than obvious by the things you post.

Yes EVERY car accident is caused by an illegal immigrant . When they see prominent American citizens they simply aim their vehicles in that direction. They might as well charge him with vehicular homicide while they are at it.The guy didn't do it on purpose, its why they call it an ACCIDENT. Why is this news?
People get into car accidents all the time. Sad as it is they do.

His employer will definitely be paying for hiring an illegal. Her family will receive a much bigger settlement because of it.
