My friend's kitten doesn't really take well to strangers. I'm really not a stranger though, because I come over about three times a week. She lets me pet her sometimes if she walks by, but if I ever try to walk to her, she bolts. She hisses at me when I try to pick her up, yet sometimes she walks to me and puts her head in my hand like she wants me to pet her. Why?

Cats want to be picked up and petted whey "they" want to be picked up and petted so you just let them set the agenda, but you could cheat a little and rub a little catnip on your hands or clothes. You won't smell anything, but kitty sure will. She'll go soppy for you. Of course she may not leave you alone all the time you're there and that could be a little bit of a problem. You can get catnip filled toys too. Bring one along to play with her and get her used to you, but for heavens sake don't try and pat her while she's playing with it, because she'll get quite wild eyed. Put the toy on a string so that your hands don't get too close to her. Hope you have success

Some cats take time to be friends with. Whatever you do, don't try to pick up a cat that doesn't want to be picked up. Pet the cat only when is approaches you. If it's ok with your friend, bring it a cat toy or treat when you come over.

lol! I just asked about cats and marshmallows this afternoon! Anyway, she is a small creature standing on the floor. If she is walking by you and allows you to pet her, you must be sitting or being still. When you go to her and are moving, imagine how big you look to her. Sit on the floor, and call to her. let her make the first move.

she wants you to know that SHE decides when she wants to be pet do not try to pick the cat up unless it lets you when the cat comes to you pet it and talk to it softly and maybe give the cat some treats so it associates you with something good

GOOD LUCK!!! Cats are always in control - no rhyme or reason. I LOVE them... Kidding aside, sounds like you are doing OK or she would not even let you get that close. You just can not force a cat. Let her always come to you. NEVER force her or push to pick her up. Once you lose her trust, it may be very hard to get it back. You can try treats and simply sitting quiet and coaxing her with your fingers. Like I said, they are the boss!!! Good Luck. :)

Talk to her in a calm friendly voice and ask her what she is doing and stuff like that. They eat it up.I know it may sound dumb but try it.Also cats are funny critters anyways. She is not yours and needs some time to warm up to you. That means also she has to come up to you.Always talk to her though as she will get curious.

Catnip --Dude--think about it. Gf had a cat from the wild that would pull the same shiiiit--you'd be petting it, it purring, all of the sudden your bleeding with teeth marks on your palm. Ignore cat at all costs unless it begs for attention I guess.

Cats can be just like that. They are picky about when they want to be picked up and petted.

They HATE being ignored so that should get you somewhere. Kittens can just be so busy with their endless energy it can be hard to get their attention.

She is a cat. Even my cat will let me pet her only when she wants to be petted. you get more attention if you ignore them, It's their independent nature.

Ignore her, cats love that.

I'm trying to do that to my cat right now. If I ignore her, she wants to get on my lap. If I start to pet her she'll jump down and look back at me disapprovingly.
