My sister is having this issue with her almost 9 year old. He won't wipe his butt after having a bowel movement. He thinks it's really gross, she's gotten the Kandoo wet wipes to help him get over the cleanliness of it. But he's still petrified to wipe is butt. Any suggestions?

The only thing is with the gloves, what if he's at school? He's gonna carry gloves with him to school? That's just asking to be made fun of.

And I told my sister let him sit in the bathroom til he wipes his butt, he'll eventually do it because he'll get tired of sitting there. But she didn't listen to that.

I don't think he needs to be punished, it's about removing the fear of wiping poop.

My aunt had this issue with her oldest son when we were kids and I remember how she broke him the habit- actually it was my grandfather's plan.
The fear came for him from 'germs' and general ickiness, as I suspect the child in question for your sister has.
To help him understand that toliet paper will protect his hands they had him use TP to pick up gross and disgusting things outside. Luckily my grandfather had a small farm so this was an easy task so you may need to improvise a bit.
Once my cousin learned A. he wouldn't get dirty hands, B. it isn't all that icky if you don't 'touch' it. and finally C. (most important) he figured out HOW much to use. Of course the first few attempst were difficult- refusal crying etc but he came around with encouragement they wouldn't let him do this is it wasn't safe/clean/they were here to protect him etc. They also gently reminded him they couldn't always be there to 'help' and he just needed to learn how to handle TP while keeping his hands clean.
After a few days the 'mommy' calls stopped entirely.
Good luck!

This very topic was on Supernanny Monday night. A 7 year old would yell out for his mom to wipe his butt (and finally, she and the nanny went in there and told him that it was over... that he would need to do it himself or it wouldn't get done). It's the mom's fault... clear & simple. As you said, she won't let him sit there until he does it himself. He's learned that he can get his way with mommy. Why not have dad take a turn here. Maybe the kid will change his outlook if there's a different parent doing the talking.

Show him a worn pair of his own underwear and explain that it's much worse being on his skin all day. Then walk him through the process of thoroughly washing his hands when he is done so that he understands that there are no lingering gross germs. Also go into a LOT of detail about what can happen if he doesn't start wiping every time - infection that requires a doctor to disinfect, rashes, etc.

yeah, tough one. My little guy was having the same problem, but I figured out that it was because they had a time limit at school of how long they could be in the restroom and he was really stressed out about it, plus actually not having enough time to take care of bizness. I was sooo mad at his teacher! evil! His new teacher is much more laid back about everything and the racing stripe problem has magically disappeared. sorry this doesn't really help, but I do sympathize. . .

have him see a doctor. ,My cousin use to wipe her kids butts at like 4 and 5 i thought that was retarded they would yell wipe my butt mom. When my kids started potty training then were taught to wipe them self NEVER been a issue i gave them baby wipes till they were 4 or so for BM. I see no reason any parent would wipe a toddlers bottom unless the kid was disable. My son is autistic he still UNDERSTOOD to wipe himself.

Don't force him to. If he doesn't wipe, he'll get an insane rash and heinous itching. Then he'll be forced to wipe his bum...or use your kitchen utensils as an extension of a finger...oooh oooh!

My son did he same thing.
It eventually stopped after I made him wash out his "dingleberries" from his underwear by hand in the sink. He thought that was much worse, so started whiping.

I agree with what you told your sister....let him sit there till he does it himself. It's not really "punishing" him, because he is in full control of when sitting there ends, but still his mom isn't doing it for him.
