My fiance is @ boot camp right now for the marines. I keep hearing a ton of negative things at work and from friends about marines and how they beat their wifes and are just basically awful. I guess its probably just hearing so much negative and little positive it makes you nervous. I want to know how much you changed if you're a marine or also to wifes, fiances, and girlfriends who were there before and after boot camp. How much was different?

Well I can't speak for everyone but it did change my life drastically. I learned self respect as well as respect for others. I learned responsibility, for myself and as part of a team. I found out about things like honer, pride, discipline & teamwork.
Yeah, I had the "ten foot tall & bullit proof" attitude for awhile but I got over that pretty quick. If he's going to be a wife beater, he would be a wife beater if he became a florist.
I know the corps trys to instill values in young men. They dont just train atonamatons who walk around blindly bulling people. The corps is about helping and protecting people who cant do it themselves. Sometimes that intails force and violance. Just thank god that thay have been trained to be the meanest dog in the fight.
Sorry for the rant, but I'm just sick of people portraying marines as just mean and hatefull jerks. They are men and women willing to kill, and yes die to protect you.
Sorry if this pi$$es anyone off, but hey thats my opinion.

As someone's who father is a Marine, fiance's a Marine, and fiance's father is a Marine... life does change but no they do not go all nuts on their wives. Sure there are a few, but that's usually due to being in warzone. Everyone reacts differently. Marine's become a little bit more "hard" (I can't think of the word I'm looking for) but essentially they will stay the same. Don't worry, if your fiance loves you, he will not change much toward you. However, upon (God forbid) his return from war I have a few tips for you (and also just some tips in general). Feel free to email me, if you want to ask me anything. Us Marine families, have to stick together you know :o) I have lots of stories and advice to share as a both a Marine brat and a Marine fiance. Let me know if you need any extra advice. Take care.
ADD: I was just reading your question about gift ideas too. If you weren't satisfied with the answers that you received, then let me know. I've got some ideas for you.

Let me tell you im married to an army guy but its basically the same thing as a marine. And to tell you the truth after they come back from boot camp they change a lot. Their whole personallity and the way they treat you. Sometimes theyre gonna want to treat you like they treat them in camp. Life is a lot more complicated and different especially if they send him overseas. When they come back ,sometimes they need to seek professional help because they get alittle traumatized. So be careful.

That's just an ugly stereotype of not only the marines, the military in general and I can't stand it.
