Pistachios are produced in a few few places on the planet....

Iran is a HUGE exporter of these nuts....FYI

well, number 1, they require a LOT of processing. #2, they are very much in demand so they can ask top dollar for them---much like beef jerky, which I believe is somewhat overpriced.
btw, be glad they aren't dyed red anymore. Believe it or not, they were pretty much all sold like that up until the eighties. They were very messy and the dye was carcinogenic.
