Well it can mean either seeing as its the first 2 letters of both words.
Try asking the person that said it will give you a better answer.

It's just how you see it used. Examples: "BFF" Best Friends Forever.
A conversation among girls such as; "So Trish, do you have a "BF" yet and is he cute?"

It depends on the situation. It can mean both. i prefer not to use abbreviations for that exact reason.
