It is perfectly normal for it to have an ammoniacal smell as it does indeed contain ammonia. However if there is a strong smell, it indicates a poor fluid intake and a concentration of the urine. It is true that a few diseases (mainly of the kidneys) can cause it, but without further symptoms, I suspect it is simply a concentration...encourage the child to drink more fluids...juices, water, but I discourage sodas and sweet drinks.

All urine smells somewhat like ammonia. Certain factors such as diets high in red meat can make the smell come out. In some cases increased ammonia smell can indicate a medical problem. It would be a good idea to mention it to your child's doctor, especially if it continues to occur over a period of time.

Normally, urine doesn't have much odor. If you're dehydrated and your urine becomes highly concentrated, it can have a strong ammonia smell.

Most changes in urine odor are temporary and don't indicate serious illness. If you're concerned about the odor of your urine, talk to your doctor.

Strong ammonia odor Potential medical causes -Not enough fluids, dehydration

Some foods coupled with not drinking enough water and the urine will become more concentrated and yellow, occasionally giving off the ammonia smell. For this, you simply need to increase your intake of water consumption to help the body flush out all the unwanted toxins.

For example, asparagus produces a pungent odor that comes from leftover oxalates, which are chemicals that occur from the breakdown of certain acids in the body. Although not pleasant, keep in mind the odor is perfectly harmless and by the end of the day will pass.

Well either two things are happening, (1) Not drinking enough water or that he/she is having too much sugary drinks. (2) Your not flushing it down for a day. Just remember, most of urine has alot of nitrogen in it. Nitrogen is 1 atom away from ammonia - add oxygen and it changes state. now it smells!

When urine sits at room temperature, some of the chemicals in the urine may break down and cause an ammonia-like odor. This is quite normal. If you are concerned you should discuss this further with you GP who can test otherwise. But it is quite normal. Abnormal urine odor may indicate: Hepatic (liver) failure Ketonuria Maple sugar urine disease (very rare) Phenylketonuria (rare) Rectal fistula Urinary tract infection

I think if you do a bit of research on the net, you will find out that urine smells like ammonia after a few hours. You can pee on a rag and smell it every hour and notice the change.

It may not be your urine that you are smelling. It may be discharge. Your discharge changes throughout your cycle. I would guess that the change , if it is every month for 2 days, is happening around the time of ovulation. However, if you have any concerns I would go see a doctor to rule out any other sort of infection. Drinking cranberry juice flushes out the bladder and helps to prevent infection as does yogurt help to prevent yeast infections.
