The answer for this really depends on what religion you ascribe to, and in what country you live. Multiple marriages are forbidden in Christianity, for example, and against secular law in America. This applies for both men and women. Other religions and countries may have different customs; I cannot speak for them.

Traditionally, multiple marriages have been polygynous (one man, several women) in nature, because in MOST societies, the male has been seen as the "head" of the household. It was the stronger one in the relationship that "collected" multiple partners. Also, the more "mates" one collected, the less intimate the relationship between husband/wife became, until the "collected ones" became symbols of status, ie property and wealth, and not romantic partners.

I know of only one society on Earth where the woman collects many husbands, and it is a stone-age tribe in South America. They were featured on a "National Geographic" show several months ago.

On a personal level, isn't one man enough to deal with? Why on earth would you want to break in another one? Just how many dirty socks and empty milk cartons can one household stand? And don't even start me on the dirty laundry piles!!!

i know that there is a tribe in Africa that was allowing it, but for some reason, almost as a whole, thats just the way it all evolved. A better question is 'why did almost every culture decide that women could not have more than one husband at a time?'

actually, I think that the answer is more of a genetic thing, I have heard it said that babies look like their fathers when born, because primates would smash small offspring they didn't reconize, so I guess that if primitive man did likewise, they would need to have only one male to keep the kid intact, though the neccesity of that now could be questioned.

I don't know, but wouldn't that be AWESOME?! Can you imagine? I would have my husband (who's awesome in bed and can fix or build anything just perfectly and is really sweet and caring and great with kids and animals, etc.) and another guy who would also be really awesome in bed and be able to help out around the farm and everything, plus he'd make the same as my current husband or more. We could split the bills 3 ways instead of two ways and have parties together and have LOTS of fun. Mmmmmmmmmmhmmmmmmmm. Too bad I wouldn't be able to talk my husband and another guy into that. One can only dream!

you can if you join this tribe. The Nyinba people of Nepal practice fraternal polyandry. Polyandry is a form of polygamy in which one woman has multiple husbands. In Nyinbian culture, when a woman marries a man, she marries all of his brothers, too. All of the brothers have equal sexual access to the wife, and the entire family cares for the children, although the family may recognize individual brothers as the specific father of a given child [ref]. This kind of marriage structure concentrates the wealth and resources of all the brothers into one family, and also concentrates their parents' land and wealth.

I have asked a similar question before, and I didn't get a satisfactory answer. I think people should be able to have many wives and many husbands, as they please. Different spouses bring different qualities. Different ages, different personalities, different body types, and intellectual abilties. It would be wonderful, and the selection of a spouse would not be such a difficult and tortuous task, when you have more than one, and each brings different qualities. There are many women I like, each for different reasons. And the husbands and wives would interact with each other among themselves also, creating a wonderful social environment.

Because the love between a husband and wife calls for exclusivity by its nature. If you really loved one husband, you wouldn't be asking about another.

reason being if you had more than 1 husband you would not know which one is the father to your child......but if a man has more then 1 wife, he will still always be the father as thier are no other men.

Well for one it's not legal...unless multiple spouses are legal where you are and in that case, because us women have been treated as property for far too long...gerr.

Go, have a harem of men, just don't get caught. lol
