you are correct. baptism doesn't equal salvation.
however, obedience and public profession will express a salvation experience through baptism as commanded by Christ.

Many people are confused or have been misled by teachers that are not teaching the truth. EVERY TIME the Bible speaks of someone becoming a Christian they were IMMEDIATELY BAPTIZED. Not once in a while, but EVERY TIME.
Read Peter's first gospel sermon, when the church was established. It begins in Acts 2:14. Read to the end of chapter 2. Then you'll know EVERYTHING the FIRST CHRISTIANS KNEW AND KNOW WHAT THEY WERE TOLD TO DO.
Peter quoted Joel, Acts 2:21 "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." Then in the end, he EXPLAINS WHAT IS INCLUDED IN "call on the name of the Lord."
This does not conflict with Paul who several times says we are not saved by "WORKS OF THE LAW," meaning the sacrifices and other things required of the Jews under the Law of Moses. Even that, baptism is not some meritorious work we perform, but it "promises God that you will keep a clear sense of what is right and wrong. Jesus Christ has saved you by rising from the dead." 1 Peter 3:21
The thief on the cross lived and died UNDER MOSAIC LAW. He was not a Christian, no one was during Jesus' lifetime.
Jesus forgave many sins during his lifetime: Matt 9:6 "I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” Then he spoke to the man who could not walk. “Get up,” he said. “Take your mat and go home.”

There is a misunderstanding about 'water baptism'. ( I heard it many times growing up). Yes, water is 'required' for entry into the kingdom of God (John 3:5). Further, we are 'buried in baptism (Romans). However, the the burial in Christ, is burial in his authority; not water.
See the case where the Israelites went thru the Red Sea on dry ground, but they were baptized (1 Cor. 10:2).
By the way, yes the Lord (Jesus Christ) was there also.
As for the thief on the cross; recall that when God created the earth, he separated the waters above the earth from the waters on the earth, (Gen. 1:6,7). The water the thief incurred, we tend to call humidity presently in this country.

When the greater came the lesser was done away with. The greater being Jesus Christ, the lesser being water baptisim. There's only one baptisim recorded after the coming of Christ, and it was done to help the mans believing, not because it saved him. Romans ten nine says: If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the lord Jesus and believe in thine heart that God has raised him from the dead thou shalt be saved.

Luke 23:39-43
One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"
But the other criminal rebuked him, "Don't your fear God," he said, "since you are under the same sentence" We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong."
Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom." Jesus answered him, " I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise."
The criminal on the cross knew who Jesus was, and Jesus blessed Him and forgave him that very second. Jesus is the Word of God and He forgave him.

That is an easy one
and "Stayathome" the poster..you are incorrect
Mark 16:16
"He that believeth AND BE BAPTISED shall be saved........"
It doesn't get any clrearer than that
And as for the thief on the cross. He was still under the old law because Christ hadn't yet died for our sins.
After Christ died the new law was in effect

The Bible tells us we must be born again. Baptism with water is like being reborn as through your Mothers womb. As for the thief on the cross, I guess Jesus granted him immunity!
