Hindi is our national language and that is the most used onle But there are hundreds of other languages that people speak depending on which part of india are you in. Also, english is a very common language that people understand in metro cities and in small towns. in villages English might be a problem. No doubt, English is the language most used for Indians, because it is the language used as official language along with Hindi by the Centre and many other States including Hindi speaing states along with their mother tongue . Hindi is used only in Hindi speaking States and by the Centre. Moreover, English is the language used for Indians by all other nations.

I lived in India for 10 years, Hindi is the national language, but there are many many languages that are spoken from state to state, but Hindi is the language of the north of India and of the Capital and so is taught all over the country, and is therefore the most universally understood.
(I hope you didn't mean native Americans, because if you did, I don't have a clue)
