I'm swearing in next week, I'm leaning toward Intelligence or something in the administrative field, but I haven't picked any specifics. I know that it's not good to think like this, but I want a job with a short tech school, but something interesting as well. Any ideas are appreciated, please don't criticize my decision to be in the military. Only serious answers from people who know what they are talking about please!

I made a 90, my lowest score was on the mechanical part and it was an 82, so pretty much I can do what I want. I was thinking of intel, but I'm not sure, something along the lines of administrative, but still interesting. I don't do blood, so medical is out, I don't know electronics, my husband is a jet troop, so I know I don't want anything to do with that.

What did your ASVAB Reveal about the skills and interests you have? Have you read your ASVAB results? do you have strengths in any areas in specific?

It is difficult to answer this question or even provide any advice about career choices in the Military if you have no idea of your strengths and talents from the ASVAB results. I can assure you that the Military is using the ASVAB to determine your follow-on Advance Training after Basic -- but that Follow-on training is based on the Needs of the Service, and not necessarily what you may desire at this time (or think you desire).

So go back to your ASVAB summary and look it over carefully -- and see what the trends are for what you show up as having talents or interests in. That is where you should start your look into Military Career Fields.

Admin has a tech school that is only a few weeks, intel depends on what you would decide on. Intel could be anything from a comm operator, comm maint, linguistics, comm ops. Tech schools could run anywhere from a few weeks up to a year and a half for linguistics. Talk to your recruiter about school lengths he/she should have a list.

As for interesting, admin isn't really interesting in my opinion, go with something in intel. An intel job would most likely require a top secret security clearance, so if there's anything in your past that could cause problems, it may be better to disclose it sooner rather than later.

Thank you for your decision to serve.

I don't know much about AF jobs, but I know in the Army intel is pretty good. I don't know what you define as "short" but the Army AIT for HUMINT (Human Intelligence Collector) is about 4 months, and that is something really cool to do. I know it's a big decision, but have your recruiter go over all your ASVAB scores with you, and the two of you can decide which job would be best for you. Have fun and good luck!

There are plenty of great jobs in the AF. You are highly qualified. Take the DLAB to try to be a linguist. The liasons at MEPS will go over all the jobs you are qualified for and answer all your questions. Make the most of your career. Dont limit yourself by the length of the school.(BTW Intel jobs have almost a 6 month school!)

Intel would be FAR more interesting, however; Admin would provide you with skills more readily adaptable to a job in the civilian sector.

With Admin (I'll date myself and call it a 702 job) you never know where you might get stuck. You might get stuck in a big office processing the same form over and over and over again. Then again, you might work in the Admin section for a specific office and deal with all the things that that office handles.

Intel at the unit level can be fun. You have to collect data from various sources and present those finding to your unit Commander. Kind of "puts you in the loop" so to speak as to what is going on with the world as it relates to your unit.

Last I can remember they don't always put you in the field you select. They just "try" and put you somewhere near the electives you have selected. I wanted an admin job and they put me in maint. Hopefully they will give you what you want. I went in in '92 so things have changed since then I'm sure. Regardless of what you get, make the best of it and have a blast. Good luck with your Air Force career.

This question is hard to answer since I don't know your interest and what your test scores are. Good luck, the Airforce is the way to go!

Go intell if you can. Lots of superinteresting jobs and places to be stationed. My wife was in admin and hated it.
