I've been inviting my gal pal of 2 1/2 yrs over for a night over when the weekend comes along. Her coming over is fine, but whenever I clean around my place before a new week starts, I find strands of twirled up hair around the living room (specifics: underneath the couch or under a pillow). It's not the hair strands you loose here and there, but she twirls her hair around with her fingers, somehow her hair gets wrapped up stuck and occassionally I hear this "tearing" noises. Why does she do that? and is this some kind of disorder? If so, what can I do to help my friend out cause to me, I feel that it's bad tearing your hair out like the way she does. It's not natural or normal. Has anyone else been in this situation? Please help!!

You're right its not natural or normal. I'm assuming the tearing noise is her pulling her hair out? There is a name for this disease. I dont know what it is but it has something to do with a very high anxiety level or obsessive compulsive behaviors.
At the very least she should speak to her family doctor about it, and perhaps he will recommend a mental health professional

I occasionally run my fingers through my hair and end up with a tangle that pulls out, but I don't remember a noise although maybe the doer doesn't hear it. Anyway, it's just a nervous action. I'm not sure it's actually worth mentioning unless it can come up as some kind of an offhanded comment that is clearly intended as a joke.

Unless she's pulling out huge chunks of her hair it's not a big deal. Just twirling it is exactly like biting your nails, not the best thing, but certainly not a disorder. Also, twisting it over and over will cause it to break, that's just life.

I think if you show concern when you talk to her about it, she shouldn't be hurt. Of course, don't refer to it as a 'disorder'. That could hurt. Actually it sounds to me just like a nervous habit - when she is under stress.
Suggest:
1. that she find an alternate way of 'relieving' her stress that will not be so harmful to her (she surely wouldn't want to go bald). For instance, after many years of grinding my teeth someone pointed out that chewing gum would help. It worked.
2. She may need help in dealing with stress. Like counselling. What is stressing her out? Does she feel nervous when she is visiting?

she needs to go to the doctor it could be early hair loss or some kind of disorder.

Your company is that bad that she would rather pull her hair out then to deal with you.

tough one... i'd just start with asking her why she does it... she might not even know that she is pulling her hair out - it might be a subconsious thing...

again... just politely ask her, "Hey ____, why do you do that to your hair all the time?"

GOOD LUCK!!!
