Easy, buy a compass.

Pretty simple: If you are on an avenue, you are generally going north or south. Uptown is north and downtown is south.

Streets are east and west. Toward the Hudson is west and east is toward the "East River."

Sure:

Look at a number, any number. If the next number is
lower, you are going down. If the next number is
higher, you are going up. Now, look at any map of
New York. Hold it up so you can see it good. If you
look over in the corner you will see a little compass
on the map, and North is pointing up. So if you go
up, you are going North, etc., etc.

If you speak Hindu, or Pakistani you could also ask
any cab driver in New York.

Let's assume that we are standing still in Times Square.

If I see the Hudson - that is West.
If I see the East River - that is East
If I see Central Park - that is North
If I see Greenwich Village - that is South

NYC streets/aves are numbered for a reason.... If the "Streets" are going up in number as you pass them you're heading north. If the "Avenues" are going up in number you are heading West.

There are several ways: look at placement of the sun in the sky; use the river and harbor as navigational; use locations of certain tall buildings as bearing points. Otherwise, just buy a compass!
