Don't bring salt to a Japanese's house, in tradition, Japanese drizzle salt (to the air) in front of their house to drive away bad luck or evil.

I would suggest you to bring them a nice bottle of wine or nice wrapped cookies / chocolates.

Every housewarming party I have ever been to I brought a bottle of wine or champagne. never have I brought salt or bread. A party's not a party unless alcohol is involved :P

I like to bring a bottle of chilled sparkling grape juice. It's packaged like a nice wine it gives them an option to serve to any guests who may not drink alchohol.

I would also bring a plant... maybe a bonsai tree?
