Hi,

Just beginning to box, using a heavy bag, more for fitness than fighting. Wanted to buy a good pair of heavy bag gloves but wasn't sure what to look for. I know they are different than speed bag gloves. Are they the same type of gloves used during fights?

thanks.

Depends on you. I trained for fitness as well, I used gloves similar to those used in UFC. They were light weight, supported the wrist, and provided adequate outer hand padding. Name brand was Harbinger. They were very similar to glove wraps, if your looking for actual heavy bag gloves go to Everlast.com.

Herschel K ~
There's three things you should never cheat, your hands, your feet or your stomach. Don't listen to the nonsense about the fingerless gloves that are used in the UFC. Im telling you from over 30 years of experience.
You say "You're just begining to box" correct? Why would you want to use a glove with very limited padding? Let's just say for argument sake that you're hitting the bag with your "MMA gloves simular to the ones used in the UFC" and you throw a hook and you catch the end of your thumb on the bag, a Zillion Dollars says you wish you had a different pair of gloves.
Don't cheat your hands Hershel K, stay away from Everlast they sell cheaply made stuff to people that don't know better. Go to Grant.com or to Ringside.com and look up their bag glove selection, Rinside sells Reyes, Tuf - Wear and a few other quality bag gloves. In my opinion Grant has the best there is to offer, go with the lace up bag glove, they're more like a actual fight glove with all the benifits of total protection, the leather is a bit thicker and there is more padding due to the fact you'll be using these more than your average fighting glove.
A really good pair of bag gloves might cost you a couple of bucks in the begining but the use you get out of them will be worth it. If you went to everlast you would be spending the same amount of money three or four times due to the fact that their stuff falls apart quickly. You wouldn't run a marathon in shoes you bought from Kmart would you? Same thing applys here.
Good luck Herschel K and keep them hands up!

Herschel spend the money and get high quality bag gloves and always and I mean always use handwraps with your bag gloves, and do research on how to wrap your hands correctly. Broken fingers, knuckles and the possible onset of arthritis from these type of injuries when you get older isn't fun. Santana's comment is spot on. Working on the heavy bag is fun, and a great way to stay in shape. Enjoy!
