The hebrew tribes had a tradition, once a year they would take a goat, ceremonially put all the sins of the tribe on it's head and then drive it into the desert to die! imagine the fear! this creature full of sin roaming the desert night.."Be good children or the scapegoat will come for you!" Is THAT how it started?

Almost right. on the day of yom kippur two goats were presented to to the priests . one was chosen to be used as a burnt sacrifice. the other had all the sins of the Israelites placed on its head and let lose into the desert.
But no it is not the original image for SATAN. They just had the name. It was the Christians that used the images of different religions that were out of favor with them as the basis for the image of SATAN and/or the devil.Paganism, the knights Templar. Chaldean.

Well you almost have it. The scapegoat had a counterpart in hebrew tradition. There were two goats, one was sacrificed for the sins and one was let free to Live, not die in the desert.

Its where the term scapegoat comes from although, someone or something else taking the blame for what we ourselves have done.
