It is at least a good 8 hour drive but that is the minimum. Well, for us it was because we opted to go the Pacific Coast Highway.
Newport Beach is much closer to Los Angeles than San Francisco.

We spent 3 weeks touring California earlier this year. We started in San Francisco and drove along Highway 1 (Coast Road) instead of the faster Highway 5! This was the best part of our holiday!! The views are stunning especially around The Big Sur. The drive took us 10 hours but we stopped several times along the way. Newport Beach is just south of Los Angeles and shouldn't take more than an hour or two to drive to.

Newport Beach is approx 7 hours from the San Francisco bay area
From Los Angeles airport, it is roughly 2 hours (traffic can be crazy and drastically change the time for the drive)

From LAX (Los Angeles International Airport), it is usually about an hour, but you have to count on the fact that traffic is unpredictable and it could take 1-1/2 hours. From San Francisco airport (which is actually south of the city itself), it is at least 8 hours.

Gunny's proper... with a view to stay close to the sea coast, you should be wealthy. Venice is form of Bohemian and slightly run down, and Venice and Santa Monica have more than a number of homeless human beings. yet some thing must be considered "wealthy". Why do you ask? maximum folk desire "efficient" seashores. --- Mad dogs: The question changed into requested "close to la". that form of disqualifies GB. speaking of which, be confident to get your fireworks from the Grover sea coast FD. must be the in reality FD interior the state that sells fireworks. maximum FD's i have considered are truly hostile to them.
