You have just pointed out one of the great scams of religions.

“If you are a good boy (or girl) and do all that I tell you to do then when you die you get to go to heaven, and all your enemies get to go to hell to be punished. And with your donation of…..”

During the Middle Ages the largest number of people were peasants and for them life was hell. The Black Death created the middle class, but until that point there were only 3 kinds of people: Those in the Church, the nobles and everybody else—the unwashed masses. Agriculture is very labor intensive and it required the vast majority of the population to work the land; these were the peasants. Peasants were all but, slaves tied to the land. They could not leave it without the permission of their noble lord and they had to work the land. When the taxes were due the lord would send his tax collectors around to pick up the taxes. They would take their levy right off the top, and the peasant had to live (or not) on what was left. The little that the peasants did have they would trade to try and keep a balanced diet and get the few luxuries of life. The peasants were kept poor so they didn’t try to buy weapons, form an army and take over. That would have been chaos, for the feudal system. In those times it had to work to support a large population. In the 1700s and earlier the peasants were replaced by the African, black, people. It wasn’t until the invention of things like the cotton gin and the Industrial Revolution that agriculture became less manpower intensive. However, a lot of it is still intensive so we have our new downtrodden people; the migrant workers of Mexico.

Back in the Middle Ages: The goods and what very little money the peasants had were sent to the noble, who had to send some to his lord, who sent some to his lord, until it reached the king. Along the way donations were made to the church. This was the feudal system and it was how Europe was run every since the petty kings and queens picked up the mess that was left when Rome fell. The lynch pin to the feudal system was the Church. The Church said that the lords and rulers were picked by God and given “divine right” to rule. With this the Catholic Church was able to rule the entire system. The kings and rulers were required to attend church and pay God homage. They were also crowned by the Church. So the Catholic Church were the ones in charge. Inside the Church had its own hierarchy; monks were the workers (some lived a life no better than those of the peasants), priests, bishops, archbishops and the cardinals were the nobles, and the pope was the king and ruler.

The biggest scam of all this is that the church used the idea of heaven to keep the peasants in check. If you did your little time on Earth, no matter how hard it is, then you will be rewarded with eternal life in paradise. They were a little vague on the specifics of paradise, but that was so they could continue to string along the people. Meanwhile no one ever came back from the dead to say they were wrong so the scam worked pretty well.

The filthy masses kept working to feed the Church and the Nobles. The kings and queens got to make war and play politics, while the Pope and his cronies got to be the power behind the scene. It worked very well until Martin Luther came along and posted his list of 100 grievances with the Catholic Church. Luther was a German monk who just wanted the church to stop doing things like selling Indulgences; which were permission for the church to commit a sin. The more expensive ones were for the greater sins. The Church was using them to raise funds for their new glorious cathedrals. Which were built not to house the worshipers, but for the glory of God (really the church), in fact Saint Peter’s Basilica was built on a scale to dwarf those that came inside.

Well at the same time that Martin Luther posted his list on Saint Marks, Guttenberg had invented the printing press and was tired of producing bibles. So he took Luther’s writings and made a new book. The bible sold well, but this new book sold like hot cakes. It started the fracturing of the Catholic Church into all the various Christian Sects. So the church has lost a lot of its power.

Modern man has outgrown the need for the beads and spells of his ancestors, and with the invention of the Scientific Method things have begun to change. Now days people like Darwin and myself, think that to believe in something you have to have proof of it. Our understanding is always evolving and improving. Meanwhile the Church (pick the one of your choice) has its old holy book (pick the corresponding book) that has all the answers they need, as well as all the proof they need. They don’t need to listen to common sense because their belief has all the answers. Most of them are hidden from view; like heaven, God, life after death, and the whole string of myths. Have you noticed that the big religions always believe in God and a heaven and hell? These concepts are what the various religions use to keep their flock in line.

A lot of people claim they have been visited by deceased loved ones. Some as spirits they see, some just play silly tricks to let them know they were there. Like a few years ago a friend of mines husband died, he hated one certain light on in the kitchen because it made a glare on the TV, before his funeral some were gathered at there house and someone had turned this light on, everyone was on the other-side of the room from the switch when it all of a sudden started moving. Switching on and off, over and over, and the light suddenly blew with the switch in the off position. So, maybe for some reason you haven't noticed any sign, maybe its just been something subtle, or maybe they haven't been able for some reason.

you said your parents would come back if they could but have not. Thats probably because they couldn't. the dead will sleep until jesus's second coming.
there is no "hell" until the 1000 yrs after jesus return. no one will go to heaven until jesus comes to take us.

Jesus calls death "sleep." It is a state of total unconsciousness.
"So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more." Job 14:12. "The day of the Lord will come ... in the which the heavens shall pass away."
2 Peter 3:10.

John 5:28, 29. "David ... is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day." "For David is not ascended into the heavens." Acts 2:29, 34. "If I wait, the grave is mine house." Job 17:13.

"So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep." "His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them." Job 14:12, 21. "Neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun." Ecclesiastes 9:6.

We all have ones to cross over to the other side. We can not be sure were they end up because only God knows their heart. They can't come back once they have died because the decision they made is final. God doesn't send people to hell people send themselves for their rejection of Jesus and what he has done for the world. So your parents are right if a loved one goes to hell the suffering that he/she endures would be awful. I'm sure if that person could talk with you they would! Remember that hell was never intended for human soul, it was originally made for Satan and his followers.God also won't send a sign from heaven you must have faith and believe what his word says.

There is a heaven and a hell.I believe the reason that the dead don't come back to us is because if they did then it would not require faith to believe Jesus died on the cross for our sins.Which in essence would make Jesus's death pointless.

The dead would be wasting their time....

Luke 16:30,31

30....And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

31....And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.
