my surname is shelmerdine, I was wondering if this is a rare surname? i've met no-one with the same name or know nothing of where it originates from

Also try googling spelling variations. It's very possible you just have a less-common variation.

If no one else has the name, then yes, it is somewhat rare, and at least uncommon. It's European, I can tell you that now. Irish, perhaps German, Scandinavian? Those are my guesses.
