I don't think you will find a specific reference in the Bible regarding this practice. It is near universal in practice by men, and by a majority of women. Older conservative Christians will cite the story of Onan in Genesis 38:1-10, but I don't thnk this pertains to masturbation. In this case, Onan's sin is not impregnating his dead brother's wife in accordance with the practice of Levirate marriage. In fact, masturbation has been called "onanism" because of this passage.
Jesus, in the sermon on the mount, makes it clear that lusting after a woman is equivalent to adultery. Matthew 5:28. Still, there are health benefits to masturbation, in terms of prostate health, and men will have "nocturnal emissions" as a normal release of semen and seminal fluid if they abstain from masturbation. This is not harmful, but there is a suggestion of a natural process, at least in males.
Young adolescent males will become aroused, and masturbate and not realize, yet, that it has to do with the presence of females. So masturbation can occur without lust, though, perhaps it rarely does. One problem is that in western society, marriage is delayed until far past puberty. This has not been true in all times, and is not true now in all cultures.
Therefore, it is a difficult issue to discern. I am writing just to give you some thoughts to consider.
1 Corinthians 7:8-9 Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I am. But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
May God bless you richly and may the Holy Spirit give you discernment and the peace that passes all understanding.

sarboo3,
Did you ever ask yourself if a Christian can be a Christian if they (blank)? Masterbation has nothing to do with being a Christian. Neither does much else. Paul said that he has been persuaded that there is nothing in itself that is unclean. It makes sense, doesn't it?
Not that Christians can do no wrong, but the apparent focus of Paul ws to point out that salvation was stronger than the sin that we tend to do. That the Holy Spirit could out do the sins of men. And thank God for that! Otherwise I'd be in deep trouble!

There's an excellent talk on the subject of why christianity considers masturbation a sin, by Dr. Darrel Ray, which he gave at Skepticon 5. The transcript of that talk is available here: http://skepticon.org/darreltranscript/

Many Christians think it is. I'm not sure why unless the fear is that you will eventually become bored with just yourself and go on to others.
Becoming bored and wanting a change is not unheard of. Many become bored with their job and want a change. Many become bored with their postion in life. Right or wrong, it happens. But other than that, I've never seen anything about it eihter.

I would not say it is against Christianity, however by doing it you are conditioning your body to respond to it, and in the long run it can make your life more difficult. Check out this website, there are a lot of "topics" that has scripture to back up the reasoning.

Yeah something about spilling your seed (for a guy) probably no fun allowed (for a woman).
Father Guido Sarduchi use to do a great routine about paying for your sins in order to get into heaven - serious sins cost big bucks, masterbation 25 cents, but how it added up after thousands of times.

For some Christians who base their theology on Judaism, it might be considered sinful. Strict followers of Judaism consider masturbation or "Onanism" to be wrong. This comes from the biblical story of Onan, who married his brother's wife according to Jewish law after his brother died, but refused to father children to honor his brother's memory (Jewish law commands that if a man dies without issue, that his brother should marry the widow, and name the first child after the brother, so that his name will not be lost). The notion that Onanism is sinful is a comparitively strict interpretation in present-day Judaism, however.

No and yes. yes for those that misinterpert a passage in the bible about spilling your seed in/on infertile soil.thats for farmers and about being careful to spread the food seed in places where it will grow for harvesting when ripe.for maximum yeild.
some religions take this to mean not haveing any type of sexual release for any reason but having children.

The Christians will tell you yes because its a control thing with that religion. I got out of that cult years ago! If something so natural is totally natural to do than how can that be wrong? Besides, what is wrong and what is right? Ive trying to figure that one out for a very long time now!
