that chows have a tendency to turn agressive? I know the golden retriever is a gentle dog but what of the chow? My dog Abby is 91/2 yrs old we've had her since she was 6 weeks old and she's been spayed since she was 5months old I have noticed that with the older she gets the more agrresive she is becoming. She hasen't hurt anyone yet but I don't want it to come to that before I do something? She has never had any behavoir problems before.

Chows are a breed that can be kind of iffy. Almost like pits. I had a chow once that was the most sweet and adorable thing. But then again. Clients that come to us can say that their dog is good at home, but once we go to open that cage...they come lunging out teeth barin. It all depends on the disposition of the parents. She's getting older, so she's going to get a little fussy in her old age. The first dog that I was ever bitten by was a chow.

any dog can become aggressive. we as humans really forget where dogs derived from. We have domesticated them so much that we forget that are going to have wild tendencies. We we talk about dogs you need to know their ancestors are wolves.
So every dog can be aggressive. Could you imagine a chihuahua being a big dog?? Chihuahua's are very aggressive dogs but because of their size they really can't do much.
Pittbull's of course are considered aggressive dogs, but I've known labs, and golden retrievers to be just as aggressive.
So how to handle this? Well I would definitely get some training by a professional on such matters. And don't make her go into situations where she feels trapped or scared, because nothing but bad will happen.
But once again I would go to trainer, even though she is older, I would still do this.
Hope it helps!

We also have a chow, and I have volunteered at many shelters. Chows can be protective and tend to get attached to usually only one person. Although this can change with each chow, but ours has never been to social with new people. Even though we have socialized her very much, she tends to be more independent and aloof. Your dog will not "turn" aggresive. I would suggest taking her to the vet to make sure she is not in pain, alot of dogs become aggresive if they are in pain. Also she might have a thyroid problem, this is common in older dogs. Actually 3 of my 5 dogs have low thyroid, making them feel less energetic and gaining weight. The medication is usually inexpensive, for our chow mix it is $15 per month.

chows can be aggressive dogs. Have you had her to the vet for a check up lately? 91/2 is considered a senior citizen in the dog world. Try to keep a record of what sets her off and take her to the vet(it could be something as simple as a touch of arthritis).

Good Luck

Chows are one breed of dog that I do not trust. I know someone whose chow attacked the owner after 5 years and was put down. We also used to raise goats and a chow came on our property time after time, killing a total of about 25 goats before we got a chance to shoot it. We don't kill dogs, but this one had to be killed.

Any dog can turn aggressive - most dogs do in old age, just like old people can be cranky. Chows, however, do have a reputation for being......overprotective, shall we say. Of course it differs from dog to dog, but overall chows are a little cranky.

Sorry your having this problem. Well, most dogs will get more playfull around this age, but you have to figure out if it's just hyper, or getting aggressive. If it gets worse, then mabey look for some dog trainers. Good job spaying her, that will help.
