I dont think it depends on the age i think it depends on the maturity and growth of ur children. You should decide what u think is best for their. Suppose u have a really smart blooming young kid growing up pretty well...then any time might be perfect to tell him about the dangers of the world like kidnapping and stuff. But suppose u have a child who is alittle scared in life and is really shy and i guess a late bloomer....then the new about the dangers of life that u are about to tell him might scare him more and shock him! the best thing for u as a mom to do is see the maturity level and common sence of ur child and then tell him or her. dont shock him or scare him and tell him when the time is just right! Hope my answer helped!

I saw a show many, many years ago called "How to Raise a Street Smart Kid" It talked about how to educate them without scaring them.
They need to know what a stranger is...anyone they do not know. The show also suggested creating a password, let the child pick the word and they can only go with someone who knows the word. They also suggested only having items with their name on it be for things at home so that way a stanger won't be able to call them by name only b/c it on their backpack or hat.
You could probably talk to them early than 5 if you can find ways to do it without frightening them.

dr. brazelton says you should protect and supervise your children, not freak them out with this information. i think that's true. i regret telling my oldest about 'stranger danger' and didn't subject my youngest to that.
what i did do, tho, is tell my oldest that most people are like apes, but some people are like lions. the lion people hurt others and, funny thing is, you can't tell by looking who is a lion person and who just an ape.

I will teach my son as soon as he is old enough to understand what I'm saying to never talk to strangers. That if someone ever grabs him to scream bloody murder. If you wait til kids are 7 or 9yo it could be way too late!

Seaelen- I ended up telling my kids that a stranger was anyone we hadn't had over for dinner after my son let a older neighbor man drive him to school without telling me. (it was raining, the guy stopped his car and asked if he wanted a ride.) His response was, "Well, he isn't a stranger, he lives in the neighborhood." Just thought I would add that.

It is never too young to teach then not to talk with strangers. Also, it would be nice if mom had another name, Like Mrs, Jane Doe, so if she/he gets lost, someone can call you. Memorize phone numbers...
