I recently had a burgulary at my home and filed a claim with my insurance company. I thought my laptop was stolen and gave them the serial number for it to be replaced. They have replaced it but my sister recently admitted to me that she actually BORROWED my laptop. If I were to take my laptop in for service, would they run the serial number and think that it has been stolen. FYI--I did not report the serial number to the local police. So my question is; Did the insurance company report it to the police or do they report it to some kind of national database? I would like to keep both laptops.

If you get found out, it is fraud, they can sue you for the entire claim back, and you can go to jail with a "shared" laptop you can use once a day at the prison library.

You don't know (nor does anyone) what information is stored where, or if the insurance company, as a matter of practice, sends all of the stolen laptop serial numbers to the OEM's to try to catch thieves.

Just go back to the insurance company, return the new laptop, and explain - or, possibly, face the consequences. Are you a gambler?

There is a national fraud database, and the police have a national database.

If you keep both computers and don't return the money to the insurance company, you're a thief, and every time you see someone complain that their rates are too high, you'll know it's because of people like you that are basically dishonest.

So, if you do keep both computers and don't return the money, you NEVER have ANY RIGHT to complain about insurance premiums again. They're YOUR fault.

Yes. And they are entered in a police database too. Plenty of people get caught trying to pawn stolen merchandise that way.
