Exercise seems to be a good answer for a lot of different problems, however it is good for you in many ways.

It may take you a while to get use to not having to worry about your mother. Your body has got use to a certain habit and it will take a while to acquire a new habit.

Exercise will use energy; make sure you don't drink a lot of caffeine throughout the day, especially during the evening hours; and try "Sleepy Time" tea, it really helps me, or warm milk; maybe read a book before you go to sleep.

One thing that helps is to have a specific bed time routine that you repeat every single evening before bed. Pick only relaxing things like listening to music, reading in a comfy chair, burning a candle (be sure to blow out before bed), soft cotton nightclothes, etc. When you repeat the same actions every night, you begin to train your body to expect to go to bed and to sleep. (This is the same reason for a bedtime routine for a child.) Yawning and stretching also helps give cues to your body and relax you rmuscles. (This is not an instantaneous solution but helps you to move in the right direction over time.)

When I am very stressed, I have to fall asleep listening to a video of a movie that I have seen several times. It keeps my mind from talking on and on, but since I know what happens, I don't have to stay awake to see it. This does not produce the highest quality sleep but it's much better than not sleeping at all.

I think you should ask you doctor for Xanax. This will slow down your nervous system, making it easier for you to handle your situation. It will also help you to sleep easier and be out of your system by morning..so you won't feel hungover or groggy the next day. Xanax also cures sleeplessness due to depression, so yeah talk to your doctor about it.
