I'm doing an essay comparing Pentacostals and Baptists. Do any of you know anything? Also, when did each of these religions start? I can't find anything on the internet. Do Baptist speak in tongues? My mother in law says they do, but I'm not sure about that.

The line between Pentecostals and Baptists are somewhat skewed in places. It's more of a gradient, There would certainly be churches that are distinctly Baptist and other churches that are distinctly Pentecostal, but then there are churches that it would be hard to distinguish between the two.

Baptists by definition usually have these doctrines in common, and Pentecostals would probably hold all these to be true

Biblical authority
Autonomy of the local church
Priesthood of the believer
Two ordinances (Believer's Baptism and Communion)
Individual soul liberty
Separation of Church and State
Two offices of the church (Pastor and Deacon)

The main difference however, is going to be in practice. Baptists place a huge emphasis on right doctrine. Because of this, many other Christian denominations see Baptists as exclusive, rather than inclusive. Baptists generally don't participate in ecumenical movements and groups such as the World Council of Churches. The Pentecostal however will focus more on experience. Spiritual maturity is not based on how much Bible knowledge and sound doctrine one has, but on how expressionate one's worship is. Speaking in tongues to most Pentecostal groups is the first of many "gifts" of the Holy Spirit.

In your paper, you might want to concentrate on the historical foundations of the groups, and I think that you will see that the Pentecostals diverged from other groups because of their practice and the Baptists over their doctrine.

Baptists do not believe that the "gift of tongues" is a present day gift. The main point the Baptist will bring up about tongues is that in the New Testament whenever Tongues were mentioned it was at Pentecost and it was an "actual language" that could be understood by a specific culture. In other words the tongue was an actual linguistical language. I am not sure when Pentecostals started. Baptists actually trace their beginnings to when the first Christian church started. The Baptist tradition is relying on the word of God.

Pentacostals and Baptists generally have the same faith and beliefs. I'm not sure when they started. However, some Baptists speak in tongues as well as some Pentacostals. Your mother is correct. I'm really not too sure about the differences. Although, there are some ... I don't really know what they are.

Baptists trump card is that the Bible teaches believer baptism, and that the mode which it is to be performed in is immersion.

Pentacostals trump card is the baptism of the Spirit. They claim that if you have been truly saved, you will receive the a "gift" or "gifts of the spirit" - speaking in tongues, prophecy, healing, etc. The mode of physical baptism among pentacostals vary.

Most fundamental baptists do not speak in tongues, as they believe that tongues was an accompanying sign with the formation of the church. Since the church has been established, and the canon of Scripture closed, the need for tongues has become obsolete, and has as Paul predicted, ceased.

Hope that is helpful!

Pentacost started in the Acts of the Bible, 2nd chapter, I never knew a Baptist to speak in tongues, but Im not sure, I guess if God wants them to they will though. But there are a lot of Churches, or Beliefs out there im not sure of, so I went back to the very beginning, when God made Adam , and Eve, what was the Church called then? And remember, it has nothing to do with the building, the people are the Church.

I am a baptist. no..i don't speak in tongues. actually the baptists have very similar beliefs to catholics. All christians read the same bible and believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for our sins. I just don't belive that a man whom other people say is holy (the pope) has any business telling me what to do. The Catholic higherarchy just doesnt make any sense. I believe what the bible says and nothing else...and did you not know that Jesus Christ was baptized as an adult(just like a baptist) by a man named John the baptist? Read the bible and you will learn alot about my religion.

I am Baptist and no we don't speak in tongues. I don't know when the Baptist religion started, but I know that there are different kinds of Baptist and Pentecostals. I have been to different churches, and we are much different in our beliefs. Baptist believe in full baptism, and the only way to heave is through the believing in Jesus Christ. That He died and was raised three days later. We must confess our sins, and He will for give us. Pentecostals say that you have to speak in tongues, and have many spiritual gifts to get to heaven. We don't believe you have to work your way to heaven. Ephesians 2:8&9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. We don't believe that you can loose your salvation. The Bible is the Truth. The 10 commandments are not to stop us from doing things, but to protect us. As Baptist we have a congregational system of government. All authority is vested in the membership of the congregation. We elect our deacons, and Pastor. We have many pastors come in and then we pray, and chose the correct Pastor. Go to www.allaboutreligion.org/baptist-church-histroy-faq.htm.

a million- confident - devil did 2- not inevitably Salvation is a lifelong technique that starts off at a element in time and keeps for the time of life. Paul compares salvation to a marathon. Hbr 12:a million Wherefore seeing we are additionally compassed approximately with so super a cloud of witnesses, enable us to lay aside each weight, and the sin which doth so rather beset [us], and enable us to run with persistence the race this is desperate previously us, the actual question subsequently isn't, "Are you stored?" yet quite "Are you being stored?" study this parable: Luk 8:5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by potential of how area; and it grow to be trodden down, and the fowls of the air gobbled it. Luk 8:6 and a few fell upon a rock; and as quickly because it grow to be sprung up, it withered away, via fact it lacked moisture. Luk 8:7 and a few fell between thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. Luk 8:8 And different fell on solid floor, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And whilst he had mentioned those issues, he cried, He that hath ears to pay attention, permit him pay attention. Luk 8:9 ¶ And his disciples asked him, asserting, What ought to this parable be? Luk 8:10 And he mentioned, Unto you it is given to renowned the mysteries of the dominion of God: yet to others in parables; that seeing they won't see, and listening to they won't comprehend. Luk 8:11 ¶ Now the myth is this: The seed is the be attentive to God. Luk 8:12 those by potential of how area are they that pay attention; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the be conscious out of their hearts, lest they'd desire to have faith and be stored. Luk 8:13 They on the rock [are they], which, whilst they pay attention, acquire the be conscious with exhilaration; and those have not have been given any root, which for a at the same time as have faith, and in time of temptation fall away. Luk 8:14 And that which fell between thorns are they, which, whilst they have heard, bypass forth, and are packed with cares and riches and pleasures of [this] life, and positioned across no fruit to perfection. Luk 8:15 yet that on the solid floor are they, which in an honest and robust heart, having heard the be conscious, shop [it], and positioned across forth fruit with persistence.
