You have to consider that a "mid 80's" ANYTHING is 20 years old. 20 year old vehicles are by definition not terribly reliable. Another way of looking at it is that if the vehicle has survived this long and is still in pretty good shape you can assume it couldn't be too bad.
Keeping all that in mind, the Mustang isn't a bad choice. I don't care much for the 3.8 engine and never did. But it is a reasonable compromise between a 2.3's mileage and the 5.0' s power. I had a 3.8 for a while and much prefer either the 2.3 (wife's car for 3 years)or the 5.0 engine (same car, for the last 4 years now). A nice thing about the 3.8 cars is that if/when the 3.8 is no longer worth fixing it's reasonably easy to swap it out for a good used 5.0 or 302. The V8 will even bolt up to the same transmission. A good number of people have done just such a swap so a little research wil turn up exactly what you would need to do so too. You may never do such a thing but it might be nice just knowing you could.

If the cars runs good right now then it should be ok. Think though its old and will have some problems. Dont think it will run forever with no issues. The 3.8 motor is actually a good motor so its the sensors and fuel that will give you the most trouble.

is it decent looking? does it run well? the only thing u should be able to worry about is that, mustangs do not handle well wet weather conditions, meaning snow, ice, and rain. believe me i have one, they don't handle well, but that doesn't mean i don't love it. if u trust yourself with it go rite ahead.

Sounds good to me but try asking the mechanics at askautopro.com. They don't charge anything and they're pretty smart.
