I just moved into a new house, and I am having trouble with decorating the open dining room. When you walk in the door you can see the living room which is yellow and blue the kitchen which is red black silver and white and the dining room which is no color at all. I don't know if I should do it in red to match the kitchen or yellow and blue to match the living room.
Please help

Believe it or not, red, yellow and blue do go well together because they are the 3 primary colors and occupy the spaces next to each other each other on the color wheel. Blue and yellow complement one another and red and blue do the same. A way to tie all three rooms together would be to make the dining room the transition space and do it in blue and red...one color from each room. Navy would be the best to combine with red and with both colors, don't overwhelm with either and use the yellow from the living room and the silver from the kitchen as accents. Without seeing your rooms, I would suggest if you have no carpeting in that room, find an oriental style rug with a red background and designs in navy with touches of yellow or gold. Take this as your inspiration and build the room around something with pattern and the 3 colors you need.

Sounds like you need to get a flow going. If you see through all the rooms there should be a flow of color(s). You will probably need to change the kitchen color or living room color and then take it through the dining room. For instance, if you keep the living room yellow and blue, paint the dining room blue, and then the kitchen a lighter or darker blue and use yellow accents throughout. Good luck.

You can take colors from both the kitchen and living room, like silver and blue, you didn't say if your windows were visible. Drapes or curtains with those colors with a matching table cloth or place settings that have all the colors, black and white are formal dining colors also. There are many ways to mix and match.

What type of dinning furniture do you have? Can you see the kitchen from the dinning room? If you cannot see the dinning room from the kitchen than make it any color you want to. Also pick fabrics to either match the upholstery of the dinning chairs and make get new curtains or recover the chairs and get new curtains. What color is the rug? Or has it tile or wood floors? Is the dinning room used to eat all meals or just formal meals and with guests or parties. You have a lot to consider. Don't make it BLAND!!! Have fun and do something interesting! You can even paint three walls and wallpaper one wall. Get some dramatic lightening too. A nice hanging fixture becomes a great focal point.

A good place to start is at the home center. They all have a rack of books and magazines that are full of pictures and ideas for any home. Gather a few decorating idea books and a interior decorating guide book to guide you through the process. Trying to mix and match colors with existing colors can be a difficult task if they aren't your colors to begin with. I suggest starting over and come up with a decorating and color scheme that fits you and your personality. Be creative and have fun and although it may take some time to figure things out and apply the new you to the decor of your house, I am sure it will be just what you want. You might also check out Christopher Lowell's seven layers of design. It's very good info and is a good basic way for all of us to start from when decorating our homes. Good Luck!

I would choose the lighter shades, as the rich red will make the space look small.

I would use a neutral too. You don't want to have a seizure every time you go in there.
