actually, nicotine is unusual in that it acts as both a stimulant AND a depressant - which is one reason why it is so addictive. it calms the nerves while creating a rush of energy, and has a mind-clearing effect similiar to caffeine...the more you smoke, the more u want. nicotine is incredibly hard to kick because it is both physically and psychologically addictive. even after it is out of your system physically, you still have a powerful urge to smoke. eeeeeek!

Nicotine is the drug found in tobacco which vaporises into smoke when tobacco leaves are burnt. In its pure form it is a rapid acting, extremely toxic drug.Under normal circumstances it is a stimulant since just one shot of a cigar contains as much nicotine to flow in the bloodstream and stimulate the smoker, however if the dose excedes the normal for that particular person,he/she gets irritated which could be called depression. Therefore it is a stimulant under normal dose and depressant under excessive dose. The action of nicotine in the body is very complicated. It is a mild stimulant which has an effect upon the heart and brain. It stimulates the central nervous system causing irregular heartbeat and blood pressure, induces vomiting and diarrhea, and first stimulates, then inhibits glandular secretions.

Nicotine: A Stimulant

Nicotine, the chemical that makes addicts out of cigarette smokers, is a stimulant with properties similar to those of cocaine and amphetamine (speed). Nicotine provides the pick-me-up that smokers feel. It increases heart rate, blood pressure and breathing rate, and makes the smoker feel more alert. Unfortunately these effects wear off after 20 minutes or so and the smoker is left craving another pick-me-up.

Nicotine is definately a stimulant. It causes your heart to beat faster like caffeine..Whats the use of cigarette without nicotine? Many americans use nicotine to start them up in the morning like caffeine.Over time, you will cause irregularities in your heartbeat with use. It will cause heart disease and emphysema..& even cancer of your mouth, lungs and throat...Nicotine also builds up tar in your lungs and makes your teeth all yellow and your skin all wrinkly...I used to smoke but I quit doing that. I wouldnt try it if i were you. Bad Habit...Get yourself addicted to good habits. Its a costly vice and you spend alot of money on a bad habit ...not good.

It can act as both a stimulant and a depressant. If a cigarette is smoked really fast, it can act as a stimulant. If smoked really slow, it can have a calming effect. I know someone who actually looked this up at one time and that's what he told me. Most of all, it's addictive.
