English would be most important followed by Spanish and then Chinese due to the large number of people in business and the world economy...then German, French and Russian coming in last.

Spanish, Chinese, Russian, French and German. Those would be the most useful ones at least here in the north of California. I work in a community college so I have a lot of contact with non english speakers.

It really depends where you live. Many of the replies say that if you live in the US you should learn Spanish before French. I agree if you live in the Southern US. If you live in Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire or New York, i.e. any state that borders Quebec, you will probably meet French Canadians before Mexicans, and I think a lot more people speak French there.

As for the other languages, it depends on your interests, and again where you live. Some cities in the US may have a very large German community, which would make it more relevant to learn German than Chinese, for instance.

If you do not live in the US, the question is even more difficult for us to answer, because it totally depends where you live, what countries border yours, etc.

But mostly, it's best to learn the language you want to learn, than the one that's most useful. I live in Quebec, and I know I have more chances of meeting with someone who speaks Spanish than German, but I speak German much better than Spanish because I'm more interested in that language.

Go with where you live, and what you like.

Definately in America, you need to know English.
Second is Spanish, then French, then Chinese, then German and finally Russian. I do believe, however that you forgot a wonderful language to learn (especially for when you have children)--sign language! If this was included in your list of languages, I believe it should be right before French and after Spanish. :)

It would soley depend on where you are geographically (or where you plan to go long term) that would determine the order of importance.
Out of the five you have chosen, learning Spanish and French concurrently or back to back would make sense as they are both Romance Languages (originating from Latin).
I would guess that for native English speakers, Chinese would be the most difficult as the alphabetic characters are different... personal preference would determine whether to tackle the most difficult first or last.

Most Important: English It's the current world language.
Least Important: French - once considered the language of diplomacy, it is now unimportant in world affairs.
Next: Spanish
Followed by Chinese, It's the next world super power
Followed by Russian or German in either order.
